Has anyone out there got any advise on wearing an Urostomy?

My Husband had his blader removed through having cancer, we have to deal with his Urostomy and wonder if anyone in the same position has any tips please?

my friend had one for 17 years no problems just be careful when lifting or carrying things as the slightest pressure makes a slight leak around the seal. my friend used to say the best of having this is in the winter he had his own hot water bottle.

I have taken care of patients with urostomies...
Most of them would strap the bag to their leg or thigh, under their pants so it couldn't be seen. They do make leg straps for ostomy drainage bags...even make smaller bags for convienience when leaving the house, which makes it easier to strap to the leg. You can usually find these at any medical supply store or through your doctor/pharmacy. Just make sure the tubing and bag are always below the level of the kidneys so that nothing backs up into the ureters and kidneys.
Hope this helps!

Check with your local Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurses

if he has any choice regarding where the opening is situated (left or right side of body) then think about lifestlye first, sports etc.
if he is right handed get it put in on the left hand side vice versa, this way he is less likely to cause trauma to the area or catch the drainage bag/catheter tube etc.

other than that i would say hygiene is important but dont be over zealous, keep to what you have been told for smooth running, whilst hygiene is good too much disruption can cause a manner of problems within the urinary tract.

there is no reason why your husband shouldnt lead a normal life.

in the hospital i work in this is commonly acknowleged.
