How accurate are Planned Parenthood STD blood and urine tests?

I was told that I would have to get tested every six months for up to ten years to find if I am truley clean from sexually transmitted diseases. Can you say paranoid?

This is standard practice for any Md when there is possible exposure. Many STDs have been known to stay dormant in the system for months and years. Herpes and HIV have been known to stay dormant for months and years without ever having a symptom. They aren't being paranoid at all. Once you become sexually active with multiple partners it's a good thing to be tested every 6 months.

thats ridiculous.

they are not paranoid, they told you the facts. Many stds, among them HIV, gonnorrhea, HPV, are slow growing and can reveal themselves years after the original infection. Yes, as much as ten years later. Do you need any better reason to be very careful about protection?

You can bank on the tests provided by Planned Parenthood. The only reason you need to be tested frequently is if you are sexually active, particularly if you have multiple sex partners or if you suspect that your partner is intimate with more than just you.

blood is more accurate than urine

I dunno about that one, we've never told people to do this at my clinic. But you should be tested each time you have a new sex partner or your sex partner has a new sex partner or you have been exposed to an STD. But it's safe to just be tested yearly id you're in a committed relationship, you may never know if the person cheated on you. So STD testing should be part of your annual exam.

with regarads to abstinence from sex... every sisx month from the last contact to get the baseline till the next two years.
10 years is fairly long tot he facts that if you have HIV and undiagnosed you will only live 3 to 5 years

Well every six months is only two times a year. That means 2 days out of 365 days. I don't think that will change your life that much. That isn't strange. If you're sleeping around why not be safe?

Sorry, I would say paranoid honestly. If you are celebate and you had a sexual encounter say two years ago - SOMETHING would defintely come up on testing. If it wouldn't, why would there be a point to testing then???

I know people are stating things can lay dormant in your system but they are misusing that word with asymptomatic. Yes, you could carry a infection and be ASYMPTOMATIC (meaning you show no symptoms) - HPV and Herpes can lay dormant from symptoms AND testing. It has not been proven in any medical documents that other STI's/STD's lay dormant from TESTING. If they did than many many many many people should be tested due to all exposures they have had throughout their lives.

PP has to say those things, just like the CDC goes through a litaney of written material they read to you over the phone. I have spoken to a few doctors, RN's and STD councellors and they have stated that if you are SEXUALLY ACTIVE AND NOT IN A COMMITTED RELATIONSHIP, that you should be tested every 6 months to a year.
If you are sexually active and in a committed relationship, you should be tested at least 1 to 2 years. If you have symptoms though, go to the doctor's imediately.
If you are not sexually active - what is the point in testing?

HIV Elisa testing is listed at 95 - 98% accurate now in 2007. NAAT testing from Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are listed at 95% accurate in 2007.

What reason would they have to do unnecessary tests? Planned Parenthood eats the majority of cost if not all for some. It is true some std's or diseases stay dormant for years or take time to show up.
