What about sex causes Urinary Tract Infections? Can oral sex cause them?

my doctor told me that me having sex is one of the causes of urinary tract infections. I meant to ask but what about sex actually causes the UTI? And does any type of sex cause it?

The most common cause of UTI are bacteria from the bowel that live on the skin near the rectum or in the vagina which can spread and enter the urinary tract through the urethra. Once these bacteria enter the urethra they travel upwards causing infection in the bladder and sometimes other parts of the urinary tract. Sexual intercourse is a common cause of urinary tract infections because the female anatomy can make women more prone to urinary tract infections. During sexual intercourse bacteria in the vaginal area is sometimes massaged into the urethra by the motion of the penis. Women who change sexual partners or begin having sexual intercourse more frequently may experience bladder or urinary tract infections more often than women in monogomus relationships. Although it is rare, some women get a urinary tract infection every time they have sex.

Another cause of bladder infections or UTI is waiting too long to urinate. The bladder is a muscle that stretches to hold urine and contracts when the urine is released. Waiting very long past the time you first feel the need to urinate causes the bladder to stretch beyond its capacity which over time can weaken the bladder muscle. When the bladder is weakened it may not empty completely and some urine is left in the bladder which may increase the risk of urinary tract infection or bladder infection. Oral sex does not cause UTI's.

I doubt oral sex can cause it.
I have not had a UTI however they can be fatal if left untreated
it would be an infection going into your bloodstream and
hard to treat and you have to get medical treatment immediately
It is said if you have sex with a full bladder when you need to
pee before sex to empty your bladder think about it
you have a foreign object penetrating your insides
so Pee before sex to avoid this problem I have
heard lots of women discuss these problems
good luck and ask your doctor questions so you are
informed

Bacteria grows in moist warm areas. During sex (whether oral or vaginal) fluids (such as seminal, and saliva) carry the bacteria into your body, via the vagina, and Urinary Tract.

If you are having sex with someone who does not shower on a VERY regular basis and you have not showered recently, the chances go up.

If you are having sex often, then the vaginal and urinary tract areas are often slightly swollen and most likely have small cuts, and bruising. The opening of the Urinary tract will be enlarged due to the swelling, and will GREATLY increase your chances of a UTI.

A decrease in sexual activity, use of a condom, and A shower before hand (together can be fun) are all great was to solve your problem, and i highly recommend you do all three. UTI's can cause serious side problems, and risk your health.

Sexual intercourse may introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, especially in women. Please keep in mind that this does not happen to every person who has sex and probably not even most woman. It is just one of the many causes of urinary tract infections. UTIs can be treated with anti-biotics and are actually pretty common. They are not a reason to be afraid of sex.

yeah i got 2 within the 2 months just after my hubby got back ffrom Iraq..i wasnt used to having sex for like a year then was having it all the time...so yeah sex causes it bacteria causes it oral does and using dirty sex toys....

Two seperate things are the cause of UTIs during sexual activity, one is dirty hands and the other is bacteria from the intestional tract. A large portion of UTIs are caused by E. coli. During sex bacteria that is normally present on the exterior of the vagina get pushed into the urethra by the motions that you make during sex. Because a womans urethra is placed very near the clitoris the pubic bone of the man rubs against both during sex. This causes bacteria to push into the urethra. Over time the bacteria travel up the urethra where they multiple. The same can happen with dirty hands and manual stimulation of the clitoris for the same reasons.

To avoid contamination of the urethra try to urinate after sex. Ensure that you have enough urine flow to really flush out the urethra. The urine will kill any bacteria that managed to get inside during sex. Also there are positions that can be used that would limit the sort of contact that irritates the urethra, Im sure you can think of one or two on your own. Some of the ones that come to mind that would cause problems would be missionary or the female on top. Hope this helps!
