Preventing Urinary Tract Infections- UTI?

I went to the doctor last night and was diagnosed with UTI. I have no insurance and wanted this taken care of so I went to a walk-in office and paid out of pocket...I was desperate! Well, the little old man wasn't much help in the info department (no, I will never go back to him!). Well, I told him I've had my sypmtoms for 4 days and it seemed to get better and then yesterday afternoon I had sex and the sypmtoms were worse. I asked if there were ways to prevent future UTIs and he said no. Is that true? I don't want a UTI everytime I have sex! We even used a condom. I did give a BJ before we put a condom on so there was salvia all at the base of the penis. Any thoughts...nothing rude, please!

He prescribed Macrobid for 10 days

Preventing UTI's:
Always wipe front to back
Urinate as soon as you feel you have to
Shower everyday
Urinate as soon as possible after intercourse
Drink more water
Drink acidic juices, such as cranberry juice

One thing that is often overlooked is brushing your/thier teeth and/or mouthwash before oral sex. Your mouth is very full of germs. I hope this helps. Next time, try the health department or your local pregnancy resource center. They are much cheaper than a doctor's office, and they specialize in woman's problems. They are very helpful as well. dont have sex

Drink plenty of water and cranberry juice. It will help to keep you flushed out. Also, after sex take a shower and wash off. It will help to kill the bacterias that cause the UTI.

To help prevent try and pee before and for sure right after sex. Also wash up everytime after having sex. You can also drink cranberry juice and/or grape/cran juice and plenty of water to help your symptoms. This won't treat it alone but will help with the pain you'll experience. I seem to get them more by using a condom actually.

First of all i blame u for having sex in ur condition.
It really irritates ur UTI. The best possible solution is to drink 2litres of water perday& also abound water when u feel pain in ur tract.U must become a drug abuse if u dont take care of this. This is mainly due to E.coli microorganisms.
Drug treatment through out ur life is essential for this.
Take care while ur in sex abuse.

A persons suseptability to UTI's are directly related to there health and immune system. Anything you can do to boost your immune system will help prevent these infections i.e. not smoking, proper diet, drinking water, etc. Certain studies have shown that dehydration can greatly increase the chances of a UTI so drinking lots of water is recommended. Most pharmicies have mild over the counter meds that can reduce the discomfort. As for washing afterward that will not help since the bacteria is internal. UTI has many risk factors, one of which unfortunately, is being of a female gender. This is because physically speaking, the female anatomy is such that the introitus is closer to the perineal region, thus the distance is less for bacteria from the perineum to enter the introitus and track up the urinary tract.

That being said, other risk factors for UTI are increased sexual activity, increasing age and parity, diabetes mellitus, pregnancy, a history of UTIs, sickle cell disease, and structural/functional abnormalities. In addition, catheterization is a huge risk factor as well, colonization of the drainage bag, diarrhea, as is renal insufficiency, errors in catheter care, catheterization late in the hospital course, and immunocompromised or debilitated states.

I think in your case, and to no offence to you, ur UTI seems to stem from having sexual intercourse. Perhaps it might be prudent to stay away from sexual intercourse for the next few days whenever you feel that you get any symptoms of UTI such as frothy/cloudy urine, pain on urination or any other urinary symptoms. Behavioural therapy is the first line management in such cases as it is cheap and symptoms are best controlled without the aid of medication. I suggest avoidance of intercourse ffor a few days, post-intercourse voiding of urine, increased fluid intake and even drinking cranberry juice has shown some evidence of prevention. If you find that you have recurrent UTI, then it might be prudent to go see a doctor, perhaps you can go visit another one for a second opinion, and he probably might give you antimicrobials if he feels that you should need them.
