Are urinary tract infections normally from sex?

Are urinary tract infections normally from sex?

Here are causes:

Bacteria that enter the urethra and travel up the urinary tract are the usual cause of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Bacteria that normally live in the large intestine and are present in feces are the most common source of infection. Sexual intercourse may introduce bacteria into the urinary tract, especially in women. Catheters, which are small, flexible tubes inserted into the bladder to allow urine to drain, are a common source of bacterial infection in people who are hospitalized or live in long-term care facilities.

Occasionally bacteria traveling through the blood or lymph system cause kidney or bladder infections.

Kidney stones, an enlarged prostate in men, and structural problems in the urinary tract can contribute to UTIs by limiting the body's ability to eliminate urine completely.

Some women may be born with genes that make them more likely to get UTIs over and over again (recurrent UTIs).1

if you dont urinate after sex, then yes.. you can get a UTi.

They can certainly be because of sex, but i think the "typical" cause of them is not drinking enough water. I say that because I remember getting UTIs a lot when I was a little kid, and I certainly wasn't having sex then!!

A good rule to remember to avoid UTIs - to keep track of how many "cups" of water you're drinking, subtract one for every "cup" of liquid you've had that has caffeine. Caffeine removes water from your system..so don't think you're avoiding a UTI by drinking that cup of tea or Coke or something.

They can be but that is not always the case..... I am seeing the signs of one now and I am celibate.

theres plenty of reasons to get a UTI but thats probably the most common way to get one

Often but not necessarily. Bathe head to foot daily at least, Wear cotton underwear, make triple antibiotic ointment a part of your hygiene, have one partner. Urinary tract infections do not have to result from sex.

UTI's can be prevented by urinating within 30 minutes after sexual intercourse, wiping from front to back, watching your caffeine intake. Some folks can get UTI's by drinking lots of sodas and not taking in enough clear fluids. Repeated UTI's can sometimes mean something else so if you get more than 3-4 year than see a urologist.
