Ultrasound?????

i wasn't supposed to drink or eat anything after 12, because i'm having a abdominal and pelvic ultrasound tomorrow, (not for pregnancy) but i just remembered about my appt. and drank some pepsi b4 i remembered, about 3-5 gulps from my straw....can they still do an ultrasound ??? will they find out ??? Does this affect the outcome of the ultrasound ???

I'm sure the few drinks were fine especially if you use the rest room in the morning...the reason they are doing this is because when your bladder is full it gets in the way of what they are looking for...no, they won't find out and it will not affect the outcome.

Hope everything works out for you.

I am confused about the details in your question. Which day is your appointment? When did you drink the Pepsi? Do you mean you are having a transabdominal (transducer outside of the body) and transvaginal (transducer inserted in the vagina) PELVIC ultrasound?

For an abdominal ultrasound (which looks at the aorta, liver, gallbladder, common bile duct, both kidneys, pancreas and spleen), you should not eat or drink after midnight, the night before your appointment. This is because eating increased abdominal gas, and ultrasound cannot see through abdominal gas. Also, when you eat, the gallbladder releases bile to help digest food. If the gallbladder is constricted (empty), we are not able to see it....therefore, we will be unable to see if you have gallstones.

For a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound (which looks at the uterus and ovaries), you must have a full bladder. Without a full bladder, the gas containing intestines can be in the area of the uterus and ovaries and make them difficult or impossible to see. For a transvaginal pelvic ultrasound, you must have an empty bladder....which is easily done, as you can empty your bladder right before the study.

If you are having both an abdominal and pelvic u/s, we ask you to not eat or drink after midnight, EXCEPT for 32 oz. of water or clear juice finished one hour before the exam.

If you drank Pepsi on the day of your appointment, you should tell your ultrasound technologist, and ask if this will hinder the exam. I would say that 3-5 sips would be okay, but for the fact that Pepsi is carboniated.....that creates more bowel gas than milk for example. If your internal organs are not seen well, the imaging facility may ask you to remain on a limited diet and then have you return the next day.
