Ultrasound Vs. Vaginal?

I went and got a pap last year. They called me back for mild cervical displacia and did a biopsy which hurt like hell despite talking to other women who had it done they said it was like pie and for me it was the opposite. I threw up when it was over and cried like a baby the whole time. A friend of mine's daughter refused to let them do a pap so they did an ultrasound and found a cist the size of a grapefruit. My gyno never did an ultrasound. My question is could I request the next time i go for a follow up to please just do an ultrasound? It was really painful & uncomfortable for me.

Yes I didn't mean the pap that was uncomfortable but painless. The biopsy is what hurt and the thought of going through it all over again is agony in itself!

first of all, you have a good doctor to be monitoring you like he is. when you get an abnormal pap, they 'should' do a biopsy. in my time i think i've had about 6 biopsy's done. all of them were pretty painless except for the last 2. it depends on where the doc is taking the biopsy from. the higher up into the cervix, the more it hurts, i'm guessing because it is slightly difficult to reach. i have gone through 3 LEEP surgeries in the last 14 years, so i'm pretty used to these things. i also never, not once, had an ultrasound for testing. cervical dysplasia, is abnormal cells in the cervical area. there are the typical 3 stages, mild, moderate, and severe. once you get to moderate, you doc should be monitoring you more frequently. once you get to severe, you will need to remove part of the pre-cancerous cells in your cervix. like i said, i've had it done 3 times. 2 times, in the office, and the last one they knocked me out for the surgery (thank god)!!! i also think that a normal pap should never be painful, slightly uncomfortable maybe, but never painful. next time you see your doc, tell him that you were in a lot of pain and see if he can try to be a bit more gentle. i really also do not see where and ultrasound would show the doc what he needs to see in your case. the other lady you were talking about, must have had a reason to do an ultrasound, like suspision of a cyst, etc. please just make sure you go to your follow up appointments. these things can flare up at anytime.

added:
after all the times that i had a biopsy done, it was followed up by a repeat pap. so you may not have to have another biopsy for a long time... :)

the only problem would be that an ultrasound would only show a large physical abnormality and a biopsy would show cellular abnormality. If you truly had a problem like cervical cancer you would catch it much sooner with a biopsy rather than maybe never catching it with a ultrasound.

besides being able to find a cyst an ultra sound isnot going to find much more. When they do a pap they take some of the fluid and cells from your cervics and test them for a whloe lot of things. and I had a biopsy done before and it hurt like hell and it is normal for them to hurt.

An ultrasound cannot take the place of a biopsy. Nothing can. A biopsy is the only way to prove or disprove cancer. While an ultrasound can show a mass, cyst, fibroid, fluid etc... A biopsy shows actual cancer cells.
