Abdominal ultrasound and fasting?

I'm having an abdominal ultrasound to look at my gallbladder at 10:30am tomorrow and a pelvic ultrasound at 12. how long do i need to fast?

In our facility, for a AM appointment for a Abd u/s, we ask the patient to be NPO (nothing by mouth) from midnight the night before. For a PM appt, we ask a patient is NPO for 6 hours. Certain foods, especially fatty foods, cause the gallbladder to contract and release bile. You are not able to see a contracted gallbladder on u/s.

There are no eating restrictions for a pelvic u/s, but you will be asked to drink LOTS of water to really fill up your bladder. Our facility asks patients to drink 3 - 8 ounce glasses of water or juice within a thirty minute period, one hour before the exam. So in your case of a 12:00 pelvic u/s, we would ask you drink the fluid between 10:30 to 11:00, then not use the restroom.

In cases like this, especially for preparations for exams, it is best you call the facility where you are scheduled and ask them directly. Sometimes, if you show up and are not prepared properly, your exam may be rescheduled for a later date. Best wishes to you.

You don't. That's probably why they did not tell you to.

i had one and i never had to fast but was told to drink plenty of water and mine was for my gallbladder good luck
