This question is for people with ulcerative colitis .......? |
Has anybody out there tried antibiotics such as Cipro and or Flagyl (a.k.a. Metronidazole) for treatment of their ulcerative colitis? Dr Gabe Merkin's website has a fair bit of info on this course of therapy, but I would be interested in hearing directly from people who have actually tried this and are able to comment from first hand experience as to how it went. As much as I appreciate the interest that other might have with this question, I really would like to limit it to those of you who have first hand experience with this. Thanks for you help! tomimegi...email me at tranquillittee@yahoo.ca if you'd like to discuss further. That would be great, thank you! I was diagnosed with uc in November. I was prescribed both Flagyl and Cipro along with Asacol. Another doctor did the colonoscopy (I was rushed through because of bleeding). My normal doctor said they would not do much. I personally found that the bleeding completely stopped. When I stopped the antibiotics the bleeding started again. I still continue to have a small amount of blood in my stool and mucus, but no diarrhea. My doctor said they only use it for Crohns, but I feel I had success with both of them. I had a few side effects from them, but nothing I couldn't deal with. Antibiotics tend to give me more diarrahea. I am on Asacol and take predinesone when I have a relapse. I also take lamotil for diarahea. When I could not wean myself off of Steroids (3 yrs), gastro doc put me on Mercaptopurine for six months and I was able to kick the Steroids. |
