I have a friend who's son 13 has Ulcerative Colitis . The diagnosis is to remove the colon.?

Ulcerative Colitis is a desease of the Intestines. Are there there other options? He currently is on steroids and predizone. He is alergic to remalade. Please help were trying to get other opinons besides removing the colon. He will be left with only the small intestine. Thank you

After removing the intestine initially he would face some problems. After one or two years he would get habituated. However its a point of no return. Once the intestine is removed there is no way he can get it back.

My wife is suffering from Ulcerative colitis since last 15 years. She reached the state of operation four years back. However we were lucky to get one Doctor (surgeon) who is expert in it. He preformed TEMS (Trans Endocrine Micro Surgery). He had burned the wound and stitched it with Laser.

After 4 years she is not cured of the symptom fully but the disease is under control without removing the intestine. Only thing she is under strict diet control. After 15 years of suffering we know exactly which food causes her more problem and she never takes them. And also we do check by Colonoscopy once every year.

Google a hospital near you. Most have a "find a physician" dropdown. Open it up and find either " general surgeons, " or" gastroeneterologists. " You will see several listed. Now, these guys may have their own web site. So much the better.

f you do decide on a 2nd opinion, , ask the surgeon to send them copies of lab reports etc etc etc to avoid duplication of effort and needless extra tests . It may cost a hundred or 2, but sure beats losing a colon.

The surgeon might refer you to someonefor a 2nd opinion.

Good advice so far. Be aware that the risk for colon cancer is greatly increased for UC patients, and being diagnosed so young is not good at all. Get as much information as you can before going ahead with anything drastic.

He may have a condition called Celiac disease, which is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. When left untreated it can cause ulcerative colitis.

There are blood tests available but they are not always reliable. There is a stool test available as well.

Hi, my name is kimberly! I'm 22, but I have had chrons and colitis within the past 10 years! I had my colon removed at 15! I won't lie to you, having the colon removed is painful and very difficult to deal with at a young age! But my advice is to take one day at a time, and the best medicine is laughter!!! It really depends on what they plan on doing when they remove the colon! If there is leakage during surgery then they will more than likely have to do a temporary ostomy pouch for a few months! I would love to talk to him or your friend!! I just actually started my own foundation for young kids/teens with chrons/colitis problems!
