Could I have type II diabetes?


I am 15, 95 or so pounds, 5'2" and fairly healthy. I exercise fairly often, I guess. I know it sounds far-fetched, but my grandpa has diabetes, I have a rash on my neck that was there this summer and is now back in the same spot, I eat a lottt of sugar and recently (since yesterday evening) I have felt sick (malaise) and with a slight headache. I don't even know if there is anything wrong with me at all, but could that be possible?

Also, this summer, I was at cross country practice and I fell and scraped my knees on the sidewalk, then a week later some girl pushed me down at a cross country meet and I scraped the bigger one again. Also, before this, I tripped down a stair and scraped my knee pretty badly (to me, anyway). I still have the scars, and they weren't even that bad. Even after using Mederma for a month or so right after, there was NO improvement, at all. They are all still red (healed over, but not gone) and haven't faded at all. I just gave up on the Mederma because my doctor said that was all I could really do. Also, I hit my wrist on the corner of my locker and cut it a little bit (it bled a little). That was about 3 months ago and it is still there, too. It's not that bad, but in the past, I haven't scarred this easily.

It is possible for young people to get Type II diabetes, but since you are thin and young, you probably don't have it. I don't know that it would have anything to do with your rash. The sugar, malaise and headaches don't sound great, though, and I would suggest that you see a doctor to rule out any other problems.

In the meantime, you should eat a balanced diet that does not contain many simple sugars (sugar, soft drinks, anything sweet including juice, white bread, white rice, potatoes). Simple sugars raise your blood sugar too fast and cause an insulin spike. Too much sugar in a vulnerable person could promote diabetes.

You could have Type I Diabetes as well. My sister was diagnosed with that when she was a few years younger than you. She craved sweets and would drink chocolate syrup, scrape the good stuff off pizza to eat the crust only, and eat four slices of white bread at a time.

Check it out at the doctor's, but don't try to self-diagnose.
