Quick Survey: Should Type I and Type II Diabetes be classified as 2 separate diseases? |
Different names altogether to stop people from thinking that all diabetics are the same. Unfortunately the un-educated typically run the insurance companies and other institutions that hear the word "diabetes" and lump all diabetics in the "unhealthy" category. - ps. my husband has Type I Yes I agree. I have type 1 diabetes and it is amazing how stupid the general public is about this condition. They assume that it is because of an unhealthy lifestyle that I am diabetic. I don't know how many times a person has responded, "but you're not fat?" after I told them I was a type 1 diabetic. yes There are two diffrent names type I and type II they are classifed as 2 seperate diseases. Type 1 your body doesn't make insulin. Type 2 your body makes it but sometimes not enough of and it doesn't use it. It's common for people to think diabetics are all the same. I thought that til I found out I had type 2. Education is the key. They ARE two separate diseases. What difference does it make what the uneducated think? I'm diabetic and it's no big deal to me if people don't know the difference. As long as my family and doctor know the difference I'm happy. Although I don't have diabetes, it sounds like a good idea. There is a large misconception that Type I only occurs in children, when in reality there are a large number of adults that are misdiagnosed with Type II that really have Type I. ok now what about gestational diabetes Both are known under the same name-Diabetes Mellitus. Type 1 is insulin dependent DM and Type 2 non-insulin dependent DM. The symptoms are the same. I do not consider as 2 separate diseases. I will say 2 sides of the same coin. Please note that there is yet another type also i.e., Type 1.5 or Type 3. actually there is three kinds of diabetes, type I, type II and the pregnancy diabetes... well they are different categories, that type 1 is insulin dependent, the only treatmeant is insulin injectio, while type 2 is non-insulin dependent meaning that body is making insulin but it does not work propeply because of increased resistance, but it could be transfere to type one when the insulin secreting cell is exhausted and damaged, and sometimes u cant defentiate easily between the two types, so its basicly an insulin disorder but in deffirent mechanism ,Diabetic mullitus is one disease, despite type l or type ll.Because they all has same problems;higher blood glucose(hyperglycemia) and tissue can't utilized sugar normally.Because these problems;the internal envirment;blood and body fuild will accumulate of toxic products and change the blood ph(more acid) and developed danger situation;acidosis and end up to become diabetic coma, also the blood vessels and nerve system get damage and show up in clinical pictures;diabetic heart disea, diabetic kidney disease, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy etc.For the etiology( what reasons) of high sugar in blood and why the tissue can't use the sugar well then insulin came up,insulin is hormone product from pancreas to control of blood sugar level. they are two seperate diseases. i think they should have different names that would help the people who are uneducated about diabetes. gestational diabetes has a different name why doesnt type I and type II have different names? why dont they just call gestational diabetes type III? what the heck lets just put one more line on there to get 3 lines..make the words a bit more similar. i think someone should come up with 2 different medical words that look nothing alike....the words that are so long that you can hardly pronounce them...or some people call type I and type II insulin dependent and insulin independent...what the heck?! the letters i and n are seperating the two Yes Questions give us a chance to educate people. YES. I agree with you 100%. Yes they should. Type 1 is where the body's pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin. Type 2 is where the pancreas produces enough insulin but it cannot enter into the receptor cells to do its job. Type 2 is usually caused from being overweight and the insulin isn't able to reach the cells. EXAMPLE: It would be like trying to put your car key into your front door. IT CAN'T ENTER PROPERLY. |
