Is there an over-the-counter way of testing if a person has Type II Diabetes? If so, what is the cheapest way?

Please ignore the poster above me he's been spamming this section of Yahoo Answers with his dangerous fake cures for Diabetes!

Even if you test your sugar, you may get a false reading since one reading is never enough for a dx.
See your doctor for an A1c test and you will know for sure.

Good luck

You could get a glucometer. That is the machine that tests diabetics blood with a finger stick.
But, if you go to the doctor, they will draw your blood 2 different times. You have to be fasting when the assistant draws your blood. Two readings of greater than 126 is a confirmation of diabetes type 2.

And you can make the test yourself too. But you will spend the money on the machine and the strips (they cost more than the machine) so it might pay to have a doctor do it. Then you don't have to figure out how long to fast etc.... and you can be a little more certain of the diagnosis. It can be done in most clinics, that may be cheaper than going to a regular doctors office.

Hi, the cheapest way is to get your glucose tested using a glucometer, the test is called hemoglucotest, it is fast, however, it is not always very accurate. To diagnose Diabetes type II (DM2) there are certain criteria acording to the IDF (International Diabetes Foundation). Any of the following criteria make a diagnosis:

1. Getting a reading of more than 125 early in the morning befor you have anything to eat. PLUS you must have symptomps of DM2: Polifagia (eating a lot), Polidipsia (drinking a lot of water - being thirsty all the time), Poliuria (urinating a lot), these 3 are the main ones, but you can also have weight loss and itchines.

2. Getting 2 readings of more than 125 early in the morning befor you have anything to eat on 2 different days (In this case you won麓t need the symptoms)

3. Getting 1 reading of more than 200 at any time of day or 2 hours after you have something to eat.

These are the criteria from the IDF for DM2, however there is a condition called intolerance to glucose or as some people are calling these days "pre diabetes", in which you will get values from 100 to 125 early in the morning or 100-125 at any time of day or 2 hours after eating.

You can get the Accu-Chek Active Diabetes Monitoring Care Kit for less than 20 bucks at walmart (It麓s the one I use on my grandfather).

Remember there are several types of Diabetes, not only type 1 and 2, and you must go to a doctor to talk about your result.

I hope this was useful

You will have to do some looking for it, but there are vials of urinalysis strips that can test for glucose in the urine. A vial of these might cost you around $10-20.

Urinalysis for glucose won't tell you exactly how high your blood sugar is or when it got that high, but any time that there is glucose in your urine it means that your blood sugar was high enough at one point since you went to the bathroom last that a physician needs to do more testing. The bonus is that your timing doesn't have to be exact like it would if you were doing a blood test.

It isn't the best way in the world to test for diabetes, but it certainly is the cheapest.

Inquire if a regional clinic or hospital offer diabetes screenings. Try to get an early morning appointment and don't eat for 12 hours prior.

A local drug store might sell a Glucose Screening Test similar to this:

Wal-Mart testing supplies:

You could go to a health fair where they do free screenings for cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
