How helpful or harmful is honey for a person with Diabetes Type II? |
How helpful or harmful is honey for a person with Diabetes Type II? Honey is quite similar to sugar, so there is no real advantage from substituting honey for sugar. Unlike sugar, honey provides some minerals 鈥?but only in trace amounts. Also, honey is sweeter than granulated sugar, so you can substitute a smaller amount of honey for sugar in some recipes. But honey actually has more carbohydrates and more calories per teaspoon than granulated sugar has. So any calories and carbohydrates you save will be nominal. Honey is sugar, every gram of honey has four calories, so count these and then use. Depending on how mush other carbs you are using, don't let your HBA1c go more than 6.5, check it every three to four months. Liquid glucose is not helpful unless you are having a very low sugar. Honey : there are many types. My Mom is diabetic since in her 20's. She's 80 now. She never had any problems common to diabetic such as problems with eyesight (hers is OK. Never had to have the laser treatment) or feet for instance. She eats everything. The secret is, medication, exercise, common sense when it comes to food (for example no chocolate after ice cream. Wait until tomorrow) and most important, keep your feet clean!!! (Cleaner than your face if possible). Wear shoes (not slippers) always. I digress. Back to honey. |
