You push your blood sugar even higher which causes more damage to your body (especially your eyes, kidneys, and nerve cells) by advanced glycation end products (AGE's) which are formed.
Every time you force your blood sugar up you're decreasing the sensitivity of your cells to insulin which results in an overall higher blood sugar count.
AGE damage to eyes will cause blindness. Damage to the kidneys result in their failure. Did you know that the amputations related to diabetes are usually due to the fact that the victim didn't feel enough pain to do something about the ulcer on their leg or foot until it was too late? Nerve damage coupled with reduced blood flow and a comprimised immune system lead to a lack of healing which leads to trouble.

Not that you asked but, reducing dietary sugars and starch (yes starch, it turns into the same sugars in your gut) and losing some weight will help lower your blood sugar. Tummy fat produces inflammatory substances which keeps the body's cells insulin resistent. Reducing the body fat reduces the inflammatories and the cells work better (they will allow sugar to enter the cell thereby leaving the blood stream).

Eating candy and chocolate is okay---in moderation of course. You need to try to find sweets with natural sugar--like fruits. Or even try making some desserts with sugar substitutes so that you get the same satisfaction :)
I love to have a scoop of vanilla or strawberry icecream with a fruit medley---(strawberries, peaches and bananas)
Or there is always some sugar-free jello with coolwhip and blackberries....mmmm
that's how i control my sugar cravings dear--good luck!

Your blood sugar levels rise. When they rise they do damage to all your major organs. You can go into diabetic ketoacidosis quickly and it is life threatening. Is this enough?

igs! ouch!
for a person who has diabetes -- the body is not producing enough insulin to metabolize all those sugar. the supply of sugar to the body is higher than the production of insulin. so all those excess sugar go to the blood and to the body tissues -- which are then metabolized (not by insulin though) the end product is KETONES -- ketones travel through the blood and end up in the kidneys. ketones are very acidic -- anything acidic, the body does not tolerate that. ketones are not tolerated by the kidneys. when the kidneys become acidotic and sick, the lung suspects that and tries to compensate for it by HYPERVENTILATING. if the lungs keep on hyperventilating, the heart might get tired eventually and may result in both lung (ventilatory) and heart failure. when lungs and heart fail, other organs fail as well -- they are like dominoes.

The real answer depends on the individual and the sugar consumption incident. The MOST important thing is to test frequently to understand how your body reacts to different foods, and any medications.

Diabetic ketacidosis, hyperglycemia, sickness.

If there is long-term poor glucose control, a Diabetic is more at risk for major complications, including blindness, limb amputation, nerve damage, heart trouble.

Don't even try this "experiment" if you are Diabetic.

However, sweets in small amounts taken with a regular meal is not going to hurt if it is done only once in awhile.
