Is it impossible to lose weight with diabetes type 1? |
I'm so disappointed in myself. I haven't been in total control of my diabetes and have been eating pretty crappy lately. Well, I just weighed myself and haven't in about a little over a month and just found out a gained close to 10 pounds, when I already had 25 to lose!!! I'm almost in tears at the thought of weighing what I do right now forever. Is it possible to just eat healthy and excersize and lose weight like a normal person even though I have diabetes type 1? I'll be honest with you. I've been type 1 since I was 1 year old. All of my life my motto has been 'it's the quality of life not quantity'. I'm 38, have had very mild complications, a rough pregnancy and have never been a model diabetic. I enjoy food, especially carbs, and a beer. My a1c is typically a 7. It took me a very long time, 10+years, to loose the pregnancy weight but I'm now 114lbs. I do take lots of vitamins and try to work out at least 3 times a week. I'm a true believer in small portions of any crappy foods. It satisfies my craving and makes me happy too. Six small meals a day helped with the weight too. Of course it is. Don't give up. You just need more discipline. Having to take insulin does make you gain weight but it is possible... My daughter is a type 1. She became a vegetarian and lost almost ninety pounds in about two years. You can lose weight, don't give up! Losing weight and exercising will help keep your sugar under control. The two go hand in hand. Don't except diabetes as a defeat and an excuse. You can manage the disease and your weight. Discuss a healthy plan with your doctor and take control. Good luck! You can do much better, control the diabetes and lose weight by doing these pranayam (breathing exercise). You can monitor weight and sugar level, so you will notice the benefit within weeks.Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume later. Once you have done both pranayam for 30 minutes each twice a day for a week, you will see definite results.Continue once a day after the weight and diabetes are in control. You may need less medicine for diabetes if you continue pranayam for rest of life. Yes, it is possible, but it can be difficult to lose the weight and manage blood sugars. Have doctor help you. Check your insurance policy, some have weight loss benefits, dieticians, nurses to help you. Check local resources, the YMCA, Curves. Funny enough, it is very tough for people with Type 1 diabetes to lose weight. There are a lack of many hormones that most people get for digestion that us diabetics dont get. The first thing I did when I wanted to lose weight is to get my BGs under control. You cant do anything until that happens. The best way to do that is with an insulin pump and a continuous BG monitor, but not everyone can afford those. Most insurances do cover the pump, so that should be your first step. it isn't impossible, but it does make it a little more difficult. keep a close eye on your blood sugars, work out, and eat healthy. you might want to keep in contact with your doctor and/or a dietitian. good luck! See your endo and have them set you up with a dietician so you can have a plan to follow. You CAN lose weight, but you need to do it healthy. You can't starve yourself! But you can eat low carb and stick with healthy choices. You can do it! |
