Type II Diabetes?

I am a 21 year old male and I am 6'3" and 170 pounds. I have no family history of diabetes or any serious medical condition. My friend said that I drink too much soda and that I can get Type II Diabetes, is this true? I thought people had to be morbidly obese to get Type II Diabetes.

giggle giggle!!! I have never in my life been more than 15 pounds over optimum weight!!!
Until now that I am on insulin injections, that is!!

SUGARY foods and drinks do NOT cause diabetes. They contribute to poor food plan, to tooth decay, to lots of other things, but do not cause diabetes!!

You are much less at risk for developing diabetes if there are no genetics in your background for it.

Best way to prevent developing diabetes: Stay very physically active - put in at least 30 minutes a day on heavy movement exercises!; Eat fairly low carb foods - give up half the pastas, potatoes, breads, etc and eat more salads and other fresh fruits and veggies.

Have a complete physical exam every year!! Don't think you are totally healthy and not bother.

I am your grandma talking!!

There's no weight limit to it, it's all about how your pancreas uses the sugar that goes through it. Nono-diet pops are bad...very bad, and you might want to switch to the diet kind if you can...or at least cut back. :)

Apart from age (you are young and older people are more likely to have type 2 diabetes) and weight (you aren't overweight) there are several other factors that put you at risk of diabetes type 2. Drinking lots of sugary soda isn't good for you - and you shouldn't do it if you actually have diabetes - but it isn't a major cause of diabetes.
If many of the below statements are true of you you are at a higher risk than most people.
I have a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes.
My family background is Alaska Native, American Indian, African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, or Pacific Islander.
My blood pressure is 140/90 mm Hg or higher, or I have been told that I have high blood pressure.
My cholesterol levels are not normal. My HDL cholesterol鈥斺€済ood鈥?cholesterol鈥攊s below 35 mg/dL, or my triglyceride level is above 250 mg/dL.
I am fairly inactive. I exercise fewer than three times a week.
On previous testing, I had impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or impaired fasting glucose (IFG).
I have other clinical conditions associated with insulin resistance, such as acanthosis nigricans.
I have a history of cardiovascular disease.
Good luck - and think about switching some of your sodas to the sugar-free kind.

First of all diabetes is not concerned with the age, a child born can have diabetes and a 50+ old with the diabetic family history cant have diabetes.It all depends on the eating habits , living lifestyle.
Drinking too much sodas, and colas can increase the risk of diabetes as there is caffeine in these. The sodas and colas also lead to obesity which also increases the chance of getting diabetes

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight
BMI= (Weight in Pound x 703 )/((Height in Inches )(Height in Inches))
BMI=(170 x 703)/(75 x 75)
According to your height and weight your BMI is 21.2 which is normal

BMI Categories:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

I think you should

-- Constantly monitor you weight , calculate your BMI ( Body Mass Index).and try to keep your BMI in the normal range. More chances of diabetes for the overweight/obese category.

-- Eating properly and balanced diet as patterns matter a lot when there is the diabetes history in the family , try to eat less carbohydrate diets. Better go to the nutritionist for better advice on the calorie intake.

-- Exercise regularly to burn your excessive fats, with proper warm ups and cool downs.

Furthermore there is lot of valuable information available on the net about the diabetes.

There is no weight limit to getting diabetes. I know quite a number of slimmer people. Morbid obesity certainly raises the probability.
