Do you think that type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes should be named differently?

I am a Type 1 Diabetic. i think that Type 1 should be called type 1 pancreatic disorder or something. Because with Type 2 diabetes, it's preventable. It's the person's fault. No offense and I'm not meaning to be harmful just making a point, but Type 2 Diabetics are FAT!!!! It's their fault that they have it. Type 1 Diabetics cannot prevent it from happening, it just happens.

woah...first of all, the 2nd answerer to your question is WAY off. diabetes insipidus is COMPLETELY different than diabetes mellitus

diabetes insipidus occurs when the kidneys are unable to conserve water as they perform their function of filtering blood. this form is uncommon though

diabetes mellitus comes in 3 main forms...type 1, type 2 and gestational.

back to your question: not all type 2's are fat..thin people can be diagnosed with type 2..its just more likely to be diagnosed in overweight people.. and YES (**shakes head up and down uncontrollably**) type 1 and type 2 should have different names. i say get rid of the word 'type' and the 1 and 2 cause you could also call type2 'type2 pancreatic disorder' cause both types have to do with the pancreas. type 1 could be called dead pancreas disorder or something cause thats what type 1's basically have...a dead pancreas...i dont know what to call type 2 cause their pancreases still produce a little insulin

I'm sorry but you are misinformed. Not all type 2 diabetics are fat. Some have a hereditary tendency which causes them to develop it later in life. They can often control it with diet but sometimes require drugs too. I know because it runs in the females in my family and we are all skinny

They both do have different names. Type I is Juvenile diabetes or Diabetes insipidus and type II is Diabetes Mellitus and there you have (NIDDM) non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and (IDDM) Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus.

Dr. Ali, DC

My best friend is diabetic. She is type 2. She is not fat and she got diabetes because her blood cells attaced her! So watch you mouth!

not all type 2 diabetes are fat. my mum has it and isnt that fat. and no it shouldnt be renamed beacause ppl will freak out if they are told they have a "pancreatic cancer" ..thats only because ppl are freaking stupid

Wow, I hope that Dr. Ali is not a real doctor. He's really got it wrong.

I totally agree with you that they should be called something different.

BUT, as others have said, Type 2 diabetes is not always due to obesity.

As you do not want to be judged, do not judge others!!!

There are 2 diabetes
1) Diabetes insipidus - caused by not enough ADH
2) Diabetes Mellitus - caused by not enough insulin
Within this group are 2 main types based on cause
Type 1 - Absolute insulin deficiency
Type 2 - Relative deficiency Some of these are the persons fault. If these lose weight, diet and excercise, they can be controlled without drugs. Most are not the persons fault. This does run in families. Even so, they may still not need drugs.

In the end, the main problem is the same - high glucose in the blood. Type 1 and Type 2 are just a way of denoting the pathophysiology of the disease.

For renaming, no one ever said names had to make perfect sense in medicine. Just ask a medical student trying to learn all this stuff.
