Type 2 DIABETES!!? |
My mom has just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I am kind of ingnorant on this topic and worried to death about her!! So i just have a couple of questions.. I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. It is a very serious disease. There are many complications associated with it. I have already had a problem with one of the complications. I was diagnosed last October and I had a heart attack in December at age 43. When I was diagnosed I began eating properly and exercising every day. It was too little too late to prevent the heart attack. Since then I have been eating right and exrcising every day. I have lost about 30 pounds and my blood sugar is very well controlled. I am hopeful that I can control the diabetes through diet and exercise after I lose a little more weight. It is a very serious disease but it can be controlled and someone with type 2 diabetes can live a long happy life. You should be concerned about your mother but hopefully she will do what she needs to do to be healthy. My mom and grandmother both have type 2 diabetes, nothings going to happen to her as long as she watches her sugar count and takes her medicine daily but not all people have to take medicine though, dont be woried. At least it's not the genetic variety. My mom has lived with type 1 diabetes for most of her life. She is now 71, and was diagnosed with it at 29. It does not have to shorten her life if she begins to take certain steps. Your mom will have to be more careful about her diet and get more exercise. Just walking is great. Basically, her body can't produce enough insulin to handle all the sugar she keeps putting in her body. When I was younger diabetes was the #3 killer in this country. To be perfectly frank she has it for one of two reasons or a combination of the two. A) She's not eating right. B) Some people get it as they age. Diabetes can cause blindness losing body parts due to infection, kidney/liver failure and heart failure. If you want to get technical, look it up. What has happened is the Ilses of Langerhans on her pancreas have stopped making sugar. I'm glad you are concerned for her health. Get her up and moving and watch her carb consumption. When you're overweight you need to excercise, most diabetics are overweight. She needs support and she needs to realize diabetes can take years off her life. Change her eating habits by eating more fruits and veggies and less starches. Tell her to take diabetes seriously, she either wants to live or die. It can kill!! your mom will take pills in the morning......for type 2 dibites....and as sad as it seems she will probley at a younger age. Hello Sunshine Girl. My wife was in her late fifties when diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. She is now 75 years old, 76 soon. She was obese, and didn't exercise. It was the hardest thing to get her out for a walk. Her doctor said-it's either diet and exercise,or you'll have to use insulin. The choice of taking pills and dieting and exercise was a far better proposition. My wife had a heart attack on Christmas Day last year. Her second. She had major heart surgery on Jan 4th this year. She has dropped her weight down from really heavy to under 176lbs.She walks just about every day.I tell you this because your mom can have a good life, but she needs to start dieting and exercising.Check out the diabetic recipes on the net, we eat really well, and I have lost weight to.My wife still only uses pills, and now she's fitter than me.Good Luck! Type 2 DIABETES can be caused through bad diet to much sweet foods and lack of exercise So long as your mother learn how to cope with her condition, in terms of diet and lifestyle changes, it is possible to live a long life. Her doctor would probably advice her what she should do. There are also several diabetic support groups around that she can join. Ask at the local hospital or search online. |
