Type 1 diabetes blood results?

My son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes but his blood fasting work ups come back in the normal range. He's had four fastings and even had the sugary drink test. We were told we have caught this at the beginning of the disease. Every time his results come back in the normal range i wonder if they've made a mistake. His Accu Chek machine numbers range from 4-16 and he has had ketones in his urine. He has many of the signs of diabetes but still his blood work results frustrate and confuse me. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Please continue to do all the blood and urine tests. It sounds as if the doctors have caught your sons diabetes in the early stages. Its vital that you continue to observe your sons blood sugars, especially if he taking insulin.

As you would know the normal range for glucose test is between 4-10 anything above is high (hyperglycemic), anything blow is low (hypoglycemic). This is Australian standard, and I am aware that is is different from country to country.

Also be guided by your son's paediatrician, diabetic support worker and dietitian, learn as much as possible about diabetes, and insure family, close friends and school teachers are educated about diabetes and how to deal with a diabetic crisis.

My husband went through a "honeymoon period" with his diabetes when he was diagnosed. This is where his pancreas's would produce insulin, and then stop working. It was a very confusing time for us all, and we relied on our doctor and diabetic support worker to help.

I wish you and your son luck. I have included some links.

I am a Nurse I see this all the time in the hospital,...
don't stop checking and please stay on top of this.

the levels you're getting are way too low. That doesn't make sense. A glucose shouldn't be below 60 or 70. Look on a website for diabetes.

What was his A1C test results? That is very important. That shows the average blood sugar for the last 90 days. Diabetes is a bad disease--don't go into denial. Be glad that they caught it at the beginning--that gives him a fighting chance.

At the begining of most children's type 1 life is what we call a honeymoon. This is when the pancreas decides to give one last "hurrah" and give it all it's got. In this period, less insulin is needed, and blood sugars seem incredibly easy to control. Honeymoons can last anywhere from 2 weeks, to a few years, it all depends on the child. what you've described sounds like this. If he is taking insulin and has not been having severe lows, don't question the fact that he's diabetic. If he's in his honeymoon the sugar drinks could have very little effect if the pancreas is giving all it has left.
Also, ketones CAN be in the blood stream and urine even if the blood sugars are normal. I've had many events where I developed ketones when i was "high" too long. But then after bringing down my blood sugar, the ketones still had yet to be flushed out. I hope this helps!

The person who says your results are too low is obviously unaware of the different measurements. There are g/ml, g/dl, and one other measurement. Trust the results, double check if you think they may be wrong. Laura, above is correct, this sounds like honeymoon blood glucose or possibly a pancreas undergoing the autoimmune attack that ultimately destroys the beta cells that produce insulin. Keep a close eye on things. At some point the situation will tip and he will obviously be diabetic. I won't say it gets easier, but you learn a lot and the coping gets easier.
