Type 1 diabetes and vaccines?

My husband was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 26. It happend shortly after getting his hep B vaccine. My son just had his Hep A vaccine and we think he may have vitiligo (both autoimmune). Does anyone know of any info out there that confirms my therory?

Lucky for me my son had the chicken pox at 6 months.....he does not need the vaccine.

That article above was interesting, I wish I was a level 2 so I could thumbs-up you! I've heard as well that vaccinations sparked the recent drastic increase in type 1 diagnosis in children; In particular the chicken pox vaccination.

Here's an article you might be interested in:

Basically, it stands to reason that the vaccine, in trying to spur an immune reaction, would trigger a predisposition to an autoimmune disorder, which might manifest in either one of the ways you mentioned, or in other ways.

They don't exactly know what causes type 1. They know it's heredity plus some environmental factor ... probably some kind of virus.

What I can tell you is that my 2 year old was diagnosed 3 months ago, which was just a little bit after she had a terrible allergic reaction to her MMR vaccination. And there was a discussion like this on this forum before, and someone else said they were diagnosed with theirs not long after their MMR.

But - I think it's unlikely that's the cause. Maybe it just sped it up a bit.

We received a pamphlet from the JDRF about these guys:

http://www2.diabetestrialnet.org/nhx

what they have found is that people who get type 1 have certain autoantibiodies associated with type 1 diabetes up to 10 years before they develop it. They are trying to find people who are more likely to develop it (through family history) so they can treat these people and hopefully delay it or put it off all together. Pretty interesting stuff. But that makes it seem to me that maybe everyone was carrying the antibodies and it just happened, or maybe the vaccinations just sped it up a little.

As I said, nobody really knows yet. Just something to think about.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes right after my MMR shot when I was 1 year 4 months old.
