What is the main reason for thrombocytopenia?

i am 25 yrs old male, i suffering from last one year thrombocytopenia and also other blood & ultra sound scan normal limits. no more any interfeare myself. i want know about my disorder of blood counts?

Thrombocytopenia is defined as a decrease in the number of platelet cells in the blood. Platelets have an important role in the control of bleeding by filling any small holes that may arise in blood vessel walls. Therefore a reduction in their number results in the tendency to bleed, especially from the smaller blood vessels into the skin and other areas of the body.

The condition can be present from birth or develop later in life and affects all ages and both sexes. It is due to a decreased or defective production of platelets by the bone marrow, although sometimes the underlying cause is unknown. The risk of developing thrombocytopenia increases with acute infection, enlargement and increased activity of the spleen in the destruction of red blood cells (hypersplenism), excess alcohol consumption, blood transfusion, exposure to radiation, taking certain drugs, e.g. aspirin, and other diseases including anaemia and leukaemia.

Diagnosis comes from the history, medical examination and blood analysis that shows low numbers of platelets. Some patients may not require treatment, but where deemed necessary, its nature depends upon the underlying cause; for example, withdrawal of the suspected drug, surgery to remove the spleen, transfusion with platelets. Bed rest is advisable during the acute phase. Following this phase, avoidance of contact sport and trauma where possible helps to minimise problems. Often the patient may recover fully within 8 weeks, although thrombocytopenia can become chronic, with remissions and relapses. Corticosteroids are often prescribed in the acute phase and in cases of relapse. Gamma globulin is occasionally employed, e.g. in the early stages of a severe episode and immunosuppressive treatment may be required in persistent cases.

The main complications that can arise are severe blood loss, infection and adverse drug reactions.

hi
it may my an autoimmune process called autoimmune thrombocytopinic purpura to prove it you must see hematologist and doing investigations and if it right the best treatment Will be
1. supplementation of platelet concentrate
2.steroids

Hi there !

You have mentioned that you have got thrombocytopaenia..but what is the present count etc..has not been mentioned..
Okay..Thrombocytopaenia means the reduced platelet count.
It could be due to umpteen number of causes..
The most commonly encountered causes are due to :
1. viral infections like Dengue fever.
2. Medications which lead to Bone marrow
suppression and hence reduced platelet
production.
3. Due to other conditions wherein the Bone
Marrow gets replaced by fibrous tissue or
other abnormal cells.. etc etc..

It is always better to openly discuss with your Haematologist the details, as a column like this (wherein many people answer) may make you more and more confused...
Dont worry...your clinical Haematologist knows the best..!
Best wishes for a speedy recovery !

alot of causes...
if only mild it could be just an artefact due to platelet clumping or a blood clot in the sample.
other causes could be decreased production or increased destruction..
the best answer u'd get is from u're treating Dr.
he/she is who knows best about u're condition.
(may I ask...why u did the ultra sound)
