Accumulation of mucus in throat 365/24/7?

Hi

My grand dad has a serious cough problem. All around the year even when he isn't sick he keeps on coughing every now n then and spits out mucus. Why does mucus accumulate in his throat so much?? He coughs even when he doesnt have flu, cold or anything similar. Is this a disorder of some kind? Is there a cure for this? I hope so coz its irritating :(

if he smokes.....

smoking temporarily paralyzes mucus glands...during interims when one is not smoking (while sleeping/between smokes) the mucus glands reactivate often creating an excess of mucus...this is why smoker's often cough excessively in the morning, and ultimately this problem worsens and coughing is much more severe and frequent

Sometimes if you used to smoke this can happen often. My grandfather had this for a long time before he died actually. His case was much more severe than your talking about.

You should find out if he has seen a doctor about it and they can run a few tests to see down his throat. Coughing and mucus can become a serious problem.

it could be emphysema, but i am not a doctor. he should be examined by a doctor to make sure he isnt sick or something. if he has emphysema they can help him with some meds that will help him get rid of the flem and the coughing and help him breath better and more easily. just make sure he gets examined by a doctor by all means. merry christmas.

If your granddad smokes it may be from that. It also could be an allergy, my brother in law had to clear his throat all the time & he went to the dr. to find out why.... turns out he was alergic to the wood he put in his living room.
Ask your grand dad to go see a dr. to find out why he is doing this.

It's not as uncommon as you might think. Doctors can give him a prescription to thin out his saliva if that's the problem.
Another problem with elderly people is the fact they sometimes use denture creams or powder that causes the same problem. You might ask about denture issues.
