Cure for Thalassemia?

In general, is there any permanent cure for thalassemia other than blood transfusions every month. Should one live their entire life with transfusions? What are the future prospects for a thalassemic child? Appreciate any answers.

There is no cure at the present time. Most people with Thalassemia Major (the very serious form of the disease, as opposed to Thalassemia Minor, which is not serious) are expected to expire much earlier than their healthy counterparts. As with many diseases, progress is being made, so if you know someone with this, get good medical care and look forward and wish for the best. Most patients will have heart and lung problems that cause their early demise. Thalassemia Minor is much, much different, it is simply an anemia that people can easily live with and is not believed to shorten lifespans.
