For this disease bone marrow transplantation is the definitive treatment. Other being which you must be knowing is blood transfusion but thats temporary. Bone narrow transplantation is best as in it bone marrow which produces red blood cells and other cells of blood is replaced so no defective cells are produced any more. But its costly to the tune of 5-7 lakhs. It is being done in all big and good hospitals both govt and private. Like apollo fortis but it ill cost much less if you get it done in some govt hospital. I suggest you should go to some good govt hospital like all india institute of medical sciences AIIMS in new delhi or PGI chandigarh or sanjay gandhi post graduate institute of medical sciences lucknow or BHU Varanasi or christian medical college vellore / ludhiana. I m in north so i dont know much about south but these are v good hospitals. You can go to their web sites. If anybody in your family is in armed forces get it done in AFMC pune its very good and it ill b much cheaper

Treatment for thalassemia depends on which type you have and how severe it is.

Thalassemia minor (alpha or beta)
Signs and symptoms are usually mild with thalassemia minor and little, if any, treatment is needed. Occasionally, you may need a blood transfusion, particularly after surgery, after having a baby or if you develop an infection.

Beta-thalassemia major (Cooley's anemia) or hemoglobin H disease
These more severe forms of thalassemia often require frequent blood transfusions. Over time, blood transfusions cause a buildup of iron in your blood, which can damage your heart, liver and other organs. To help your body get rid of the extra iron, you may need to take medications known as "iron chelators." These medications may be given as a pill or as an infusion under your skin. In some cases, a bone marrow transplant or a stem cell transplant may be used to treat severe thalassemia.
Please see the web pages for more details on Thalassemia.
