Tension headache relief?

I get tension headaches a few times a week. They are HORRIBLE. They usually start sometime in the afternoon and usually last well into the night, to the point that they interfere with my sleep. I'm a student, so stress is always going to be a factor. However, no matter what I do after the headache starts (tons of advil, cold compresses, etc.) the pain doesn't go away!

It really hurts in the back of my neck and it feels like there is a vice between my temples. I also get kinda sensitive to light/noise and I tend to feel nauseous.

Could be a migraine, but more likely is tension. I used to get tension headaches that started in my neck and felt, like you say, a vice between my temples. No OTC drug ever worked for even a moment. The only thing that worked was the prescription drug Fiorinal. It was a lifesaver. It does contain caffeine so maybe just the caffeine could work, but I would see a doctor if I were you.

It sounds like you may be experiencing migraine headaches. The sensitivity to light and nausea is a sign of that. I have had both tension and migraines. Caffeine helps for tension headaches, in fact, the tylenol tension headache pills have caffeine in them. If caffeine doesn't help, check with a doctor about migraines.

hi.
1) pray to god
2) listen to music
3)sing ur self
4)read stories
5)watch movies
6)leave probs in it own path
7)leave rest to god

My aunt gets the exact same thing, sometimes it lasts for her up to 6 or 7 days, she said the only thing that has helped relieve the tension is by taking Excedrin for Tension Headaches. Hope that helps a little.

There are a couple of things you can do.
1) go get a massage. Specify when you make the appointment that you have a 'tension' headach or 'migrane' headach, so that they can book you with the best person for your issue. If you go for 30min, the she will most likely focus on giving you a good neck and scalp massage.

2) I don't know about the states, but in Canada you can buy this thing in the pharmacy which is called "migrastick" it's this slim little bullet shaped thing that has peppermint and lavendar oil in it. you can massage that yourself on your scalp and the place where your neck meets your scull. Not too close to your eyes, it won't feel good. It has this soothing cooling effect that kinda 'numbs' your headach away. Its fantastic I make my own by mixing peppermint and lavender. I swear by this, and so does my family. It really helps, even the smell.

make sure to drink lots of water, it does help more than people think. STAY AWAY from drinking too much coffee or sugary drinks. That does not help.

Hot baths/showers help.

Good luck. headachs suck.

well it pretty common, & so is cure
1). we can not control everything, somethings have to happen, keep this kind of approach towards things.
2). when ever u get a headache try chewing a Chewing Gum.
3).Do some simple methamaticel calculations.
4).Learn Meditation, or some yoga is works for everybody.
The idea is to divert mind, towards relaxation, comfert.
WE can think better with relaxed mind then the stressed mind .
I too suffered from it, but got rescue by practising these things.
