How do deal with ankle tendinitis?

I have had ankle tendinitis in the lower back of my ankle due to excessive running and playing basketball. I had this problem for almost 3 years. There is also a bump on top of where my tendinitis occurs.

I just want to know what can i do to get rid of the tendinitis for good? because it goes away for a while then it comes back.

Also, what are the long term effects of having tendinitis?

It is not that painful. Its just an irritating burning sensation that is going on in my tendon. Yes. I am getting insurance pretty soon and i will have my family doctor to refer me to a foot doctor. Thank You guys. I will wait a little longer for more answers then i will put this question to vote.

Have you been seeing a sports medicine doctor? It'd be a great idea to see one. I have knee problems and I wasn't getting anywhere with regular family docs.... I was finally diagnosed correctly and treated once I visited a sports medicine doc. If you can see an physical therapist and/or a athletic trainer, do so regularly.

When your ankle bothers you... RICE it.

Rest - take it easy when it hurts and avoid walking on it.
Ice - ice it in 15 min. intervals
Compression - use ace bandages
Elevation - elevate your ankle above the level of your heart.

I would highly suggest having your ankle taped before you participate in any sports. See if you can have an athletic trainer or coach do this for you... it's very difficult to do it properly to yourself. You may also want to take some aspirin or ibuprofen if it hurts.

You're more likely to rupture your tendon if you have tendinitis, and you may have permanent damage. To prevent these complications it's important to have your ankle checked out regularly and critical that when it hurts you RICE it. If you take good care of your ankle your symptoms may subside and never return.

Good luck! Hope it feels better.

Hello, I work for a Podiatrist (Foot Doctor). I would recommend you seeing a Podiatrist because you may need to consider getting orthotics. The Podiatrist can even put a shot of cortisone to help with the inflammation. Also by seeing a Podiatrist you will be able to rule out any other problems that may be causing your pain and they can send you to physical therapy to help strengthen your tendons.

If you have an ankle brace I would wear it when your ankle is flared up. It will help support it and not let it get over used. Also, you can take some Ibuprofen when it gets painfull.

I hope this helps, Good Luck.
