You will do well or have a head start to good money if you specialize in something to do with senior citizens. Millions of baby boomers are aging out as we speak. We will need your care in the near future. You will have a job for a long long time if you enter this field and my generation will be grateful.

If you want to have a proffesional name with a less period of years in study , take dentistry.Try searching for occupational therapist, I think thats also a interesting job with less stress at work.

You should start with looking at the state of healthcare. Doctors are RAPIDLY leaving the Gynocological field because of the huge increases in malpractice insurance. Last year there were less than 50 gyno doctors in Clark County Nevada, one of the fastest growing counties in the country. They're leaving because the insurance was 250-K a year and UP! Same thing in Florida and many other places in the country.

Surgeons and many other specialties are also having a heck of a time covering the costs to be in business.

BTW, You can thank the trial lawyers association for this problem. The Trial Lawyers were THE top political action committee giving money to candidates and they gave 95%+ to democrats. anyway...

So there's a lot of pressure just to pay the bills. Add insurance to the huge school loans (6 figures) and being a medical doctor looks less appealing. But it gets worse...

In California Medi-Cal payment rates are still based on guidelines from 1969. I've placed a source where you can read about how 1 doctor does cosmetic surgery to cover the cost of treating people in need. Insurance companies, always on the lookout to cut costs also continue to cut payment rates to doctors.

Add all this to the focus on general cost cutting, the move to managed care and other changes that must happen over the next decade and being a doctor lokks more and more to be a dicey proposition.

That's not to say that there aren't some good health care options.
Consider:
Pharmacists - Graduate right out of college and expect to make 70-100-K per year without the doctor headaches.

Check out anything to do wtih geriatrics. With the huge increase expected in the senior population due to the baby boomer retirements, this is probably one of the safer career considerations.

Finally, you may want to check out careers in the psychological area. Mental illness is on the increase and there's more focus on providing benefits to help those with mental disorders.
