Why is Tay-Sachs disease common in Ashkenazi Jews? |
What makes them more likely to get it than other cultures? Genetic diseases are passed within that culture....only plenty out breeding out of that culture will change the genetic bloodlines that dominate the disease. Tay-Sachs is a genetic disease. It's simply a matter of certain peoples having that defective gene in a higher concentration than others. The gene that causes this disease is more prevalent in this particular population - just as sickle cell disease is more common among black people (tho not exclusive to them) and just as hemophiliacs were more common among the royals (cause a prince could only marry a princess so they became more closely related). |
