Dermographism and Tattoos?

I have a skin condition called Dermographism which causes raised welts on my skin when scratched. I really want to get a tattoo. Does anyone with Dermographism think this is a bad idea? I need feedback! :)

It depends on the reason you have dermagraphism. SOme are temporary; some are medically treated with antihistamines.

If you really want a tattoo, I suspect the process of tattooing could be problematic as the skin will distort while the tattoo is being applied. Ask the tattoo artist to do a small, obscure test tattoo to see how you react.

Remember tho that dermagraphism can manifest because of other probelms, specifically autoimmune problems, and those can cause a higher than normal rejection of the tattoo ink... you are in danger of both a distorted image, uneven take-up of the ink, or scar tissue.

Talk to the tattoo artist; get a small test site; if you decide to have a tat, then consider using antihistamines before you get the tat to prevent welting during the tat application. Some tattooists will not give you a tattoo- make sure you go to someone reputable.

I have dermagraphism- and I know I can't tattoo because I react to the ink. That and the skin swells and bleeds so much that the tattoo artist said it would blur and distort.

Sorry to bear bad news, but I think you had pretty much guessed- try the antihistamine thing tho, and a test tat. Maybe you and I have this problem for different reasons and to a different degree so you might not react as badly. Remember that a tat itches while healing, so if you get one, you have to be careful not to scratch or if will scar and that damages it.

Good luck!

i have a question for hachi machi though... so you've gotten tattoo's while having dermographism and they've turned out ok? I'm thinking about taking that advice and trying a test area out... Report It

NO, i get that due to allergies, and I have a couple of tattoos. the only thing I have noticed is that occassionally, the skin where my tattoo is will get irritated and raised, but that goes away.
