Tattoos - is there any health risk in having a tattoo done - maybe infection etc?

Funny question from a Grandmother - but I have found my mate and want to do this for him.

There are dangers.
If you do not choose the right business, you could end up with:


Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS and other infections when getting a tattoo. Protect yourself from Hepatitis B by getting vaccinated. There are no vaccines for Hepatitis C or HIV.

Do not drink alcohol before getting a tattoo, it can cause excess bleeding

Check that the artist wears protective gloves

Is the artist vaccinated for Hepatitis B?

Make sure that the equipment is clean/new. Ointments, ink, water, should be taken from seperate containers

Cleanliness counts: Tattoo parlors are becoming more mainstream, but don't take it for granted that the place is clean. Ask for a tour and be discriminating when deciding about the cleanliness and quality of the establishment.

Sterile needles should be taken from an autoclave bag in front of you. After use the needles should be disposed of appropriately.

Fresh inks: Colors come from inks, and every ink should come from a bottle that's poured into a small cup specifically for your tattoo. Just as you don't want to share needles, you don't want to share inks. If ink remains after a tattoo has been completed, it should be thrown away.

Check to see examples of artist designs, and also pictures of finished designs.

Take the time to shop around. Check out many different artists

NO, i have two and there is absolutley no problem. The worst that will happen is that, as it is healing, it might itch a little.

there is always a risk getting an infection from tatoos check out all the parlors and go by reputation. some places dont clean thier needles and thier shops look like crap

You might get infected with HIV, hepatitis C and B, which could be the most life-threatening diseases. It will also preclude you from donating blood in the future and you may get profiled if you're looking for a job.

Any time you cause trauma to the skin and break it there is a risk of infection. Most parlors are good about only using sterilized instruments, but there are some out there that are unscrupulous.

ABSOLUTELY there is always a risk! But as long as the tatoo artist cleans his instruments and his work space well it should be okay. But Hep C is a big concern.

hepatitis C with a dirty needle - I've seen it before in the hospital.

there is always risk for infection, just take care of it and maybe it will be ok!!
