Diabetes and tattoos...? |
What are the risk factors in getting a tattoo it youre a diabetic? According to S. William Levy, MD, clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center, "There's no harm in getting a tattoo as long as you take the necessary precautions." none i am diabetic and i have a small tatoo on the top of my right arm, when i went to the doctors and he noticed it he said i had to watch because of the healing process, keep it clean and use antibacterial lotion to bathe it after you have had it done and there shouldnt be any problems. There is a risk because Diabetics have trouble with infection from any opening in the skin like a cut, and you know how those needles go in so quick....as long as you keep an eye on it and take precautions after it is done like making sure it is cleaned and not picking at the scab, you will be okay. I am diabetic (type2) but I got a dreamcatcher on my left arm and gonna get a guitar with wings on the right....GO FOR IT, but keep watch! Diabetic individuals may experience slower wound healing. A tattoo is considered a wound. If a diabetic is considering receiving a tattoo, he/she should discuss it with both his/her physician and with the tattoo artist. Not all diabetics have impaired wound healing and the personal physician may be the best source for the go-ahead on a tattoo. The tattoo artist, if he/she is licensed and reputable, may be able to make suggestions regarding ways to decrease the healing time. I am a type 1 diabetic, I wear an insulin pump and I have several tattoos. I got my most recent tattoo 3 weeks ago and have never had any problems. also i would make sure your blood sugar is under good control and that you check it throughout the process. I wanted to get one (im diabetic) but i never had because this girl i know got one (that has diabetes) and she had to go to the hospital, almost in a coma. Being diabetic means that it may take longer to heal and you need to be more mindful of infection since diabetics have a tendency to be prone to infection. And don't forget to eat before you get your tattoo, you don't want your sugar to drop. My husband is Type II and has 2 tats, he didn't have any problems with either one. ^Tattooing can be dangerous for anyone, you need to make sure they sterilize their equipment properly. For a diabetic it's much riskier, remember we don't heal like other people. Don't listen to Redflower, tattoos are harmless if you get one by someone who knows what the hell they are doing and you know how to care for them. Yes I am diabetic, and yes I have MANY tattoos, and have never had a problem other than them taking a long time to heal. |
