What is the meaning of tachypnea? |
What is the meaning of tachypnea? Abnormally fast respiration. Rapid breathing. In medicine, hyperventilation (or hyperpnea) is the state of breathing faster or deeper (hyper) than necessary, and thereby reducing the carbon dioxide concentration of the blood below normal. This causes various symptoms such as numbness or tingling in the hands, feet and lips, lightheadedness, dizziness, headache, chest pain, slurred speech and sometimes fainting. Greek word tachy swift or rapid n pnea breath. Tachy = fast fast respirations Tachypnea means faster than normal breathing. Normal respiratory rates vary depending on age. Normal respiratory rate for a newborn is about 44 breaths per minute, for an infant it is 20-40 breaths per minute, for pre-school children it is 20-30 breaths per minute, for adults it is 14-18 breaths per minute, and for older adults it is 19-26 breaths per minute. Tachypnea is breathing significantly over those normal rates. This often happens when for whatever reason (infection, lung disease, etc.), the person has to breathe faster to eliminate carbon dioxide. My infant daughter has ILD, and at her sickest, she has had respiratory rates well over 100. Even now, she is doing quite well and "only" breathes 60 breaths per minute. I'd say that you could probably call her tachypneic although considering the damage she has and the problems she has had, 60 for her is very good. It is all relative, but really is a great indicator in when there might be a medical problem. Tachypnea means shortness of breath. When you are tachypneic, you breath really fast. It is respirations above 22 per minute tachypnea is breathing more than 20 in a minute It means to breath too fast. |
