Sinus Tachycardia and anxiety?

I spoke with my GP this afternoon having been experiencing rapid heart rate for a few weeks now and now am getting palpitations. He told me that it is anxiety related. I have had dozens and dozens of blood tests and all levels were normal, I even had blood tests done in A & E two days ago which were related to heart conditions and I was told they were normal. However, I take beta blockers at the moment but they make the palpitations worse, the GP says it's anxiety.

But, can anxiety cause on-going sinus tachycardia? It seems that as soon as the beta blocker wears off the heart rate is up again! I was perfectly healthy until recently. I do have anxiety, but sometimes the rate goes up when I'm relaxed, and I feel it pounding.

If it is anxiety related is the tachy constant or on and off?

Does it cause the on-going sinus tachy? Or is it on and off? I'm very worried, I'm also getting skipped beats.

if your doctor's opinion is anxiety -then treat it.

It's anxiety. Sinus tachy isn't going to hurt you, but it's just annoying. Get on an anti-anxiety medication (Zoloft is most common) and try to relax. Start drinking more cammomile tea and reduce the stressors in your life that are causing the anxiety.

Get a referral to a cardiologist. If the BB make your palpitations worse, then they may not be the right "anxiety" medication for you.

There are other problems that can be seen with tachycardia that are intermittent. EKg's and tests the GP does only give a snapshot of whats happening in that moment.

They may not catch an intermittent problem.

I know of this from experience. I had similar symptoms and kept going in only to be told anxiety. Then one day I had the same symptoms and drove myself to the ER, telling them its anxiety but it is so bothersome. Only to find out my heart rate was over 250 and I was in atrial fibrillation.

I saw a good electrophysiologist and they did a procedure called ablation. Its just better for you and your peace of mind to get a cardiologists opinion before you let them dismiss it as anxiety.

There are two aspects to Heart Beat : Rate and Rhythm.

Rate is the frequency of heart beat and 60-100/min is considered normal. Variations exist. >100/min is called Tachycardia.
Rhythm is the mode of heart beat, Sinus rhythm is the normal rhythm. Anxiety or Generalized Anxiety Disorder can cause sinus tachycardia which is either intermittent or continuous. Dropped beats sometimes do occur but may not be of concern until they are >5/min.
Untreated sinus tachycardia may be problematic in due course, hence beta blockers to control the rate.
Zoloft is technically Sertraline which increases the level of a neurotransmitter Serotonin in the brain. It is used to treat Depression and Anxiety in different dosage regimens.
