TB question? |
i'm a healthy 14 yr old and i'm going to russia, estonia, and finland this summer. (about 11 days total) i've heard there is a high risk for getting TB. im really paranoid about diseases and hospitals. is there any way to protect against TB? please help! (i have a vaccination for TB but i've also heard rumors about there being a new form that isnt curable...?) Hi! Glad to hear you're getting to travel and understand your concern for getting TB. TB is spread through what we call the droplet method, meaning sneezing, coughing, touching things contaminated with the germs such as kleenex(dirty), other items infected people may have touched/coughed upon/sneezed on,etc. The best defense against any germs is to wash hands thoroughly after touching items. You can carry hand sanitizer with you which kills germs but good ole soap and water works. The reality is anyone in any country could be a carrier. Just follow handwashing and back away from people coughing/sneezing without covering their mouths. There are so many diseases out there now we could all be paranoid, but don't stop enjoying life with worrying about everything you could catch. Just follow good prevention and the best is handwashing for at least 15 seconds with soap and water. This applies to any germs. The new form of Tb is Multiple resistance TB, it is curable but it takes a long time in hospital, my husband was in hospital for 3 years and was cleared of the disease after 5 years, plus he had half a lung removed. He caught it from someone coughing as they walked past him, just steer clear of anyone coughing or sneezing and as above says wash your hands.........Dont worry too much tho or you wont enjoy your holiday... TB is not easy to contract. U need multiple constant contact to get it. One TB bacterium won't give U the disease since ur immune system will destroy it. So even if U are exposed to TB patient abroad, U will be safe. Just make sure U have a good immune system prior to ur trip.. Avoid much sugar. It suppresses ur immune system by abt 92% if take too much of it. |
