Does Latent TB ever go away?

My mother was exposed to TB 50 years ago because her father had it. She has never developed it but she has tested positive on the skin test and negative on chest xray. The doctors at that time did not recomend INH or any other drug for latent TB. Since latent TB cannot be transmitted to anyone else, none of her family ever developed TB. Is there a chance it has completely gone away?

This means she was exposed to it but never really got it ...so her test will always show positive and in order to determin if she ever gets it or not,,,she will need to skip this test and do a chest film.

No it will never go away...once you have been exposed you will always test positive on the TB skin test....but as you have said she is not transmitting TB to anyone and she most likely will never developed TB..especially since you say that she was expose 50years ago. So there really isn't anything to worry about...other then the simple fact that she will always test positive on the skin test. Hope that helps
