Could I have syphilis for 3 years without any ill effects by now?

I dont know if I have syphilis or not but im going to get tested in a few days, but "it" happened just under 3 years ago, could I have syphilis and not know it still? Also if it has done damage to my major organs would I have some symptoms? My only symptoms were like a few days after the sexual encounter was a painful red sore throat, with a red bump on the roof of my mouth that hurt badly to touch, the bump had redness around it and was red itself, it was raised. I didnt have the palm rash or anything, so could I have internal damage already or does that take longer to happen? Im getting tested in few days. Thanks

Tertiary syphilis can follow the initial infection, primary syphilis, by 3 to 15 years. Secondary syphilis is the stage that precedes tertiary syphilis if primary syphilis is not treated.

In tertiary syphilis, the spirochetes have continued to reproduce for years. Pockets of damage accumulate in various tissues such as the bones, skin, nervous tissue, heart, and arteries. These lesions are called gummas and are very destructive.

Lesions in the central nervous system produce neurological disease called neurosyphilis which can include tabes dorsalis, general paresis, and optic atrophy. Lesions of the heart, heart valves and aorta can lead to aneurysms, valvular heart disease, and aortitis.

Tertiary syphilis is less frequently seen today than in the past because of early detection and adequate treatment. The incidence of tertiary syphilis is approximately 5 per 100,000 individuals annually in the US.

Syphillis can go without any symptoms in some people, for many years, before it starts to show symptoms. It is not usualy transmitted to the mouth however. What you describe sounds more like a gonorrhea infection, which is more likely. The incidence of syphillis in the US is far far less than gonorrhea. Could also have been some other bacteria. In any case a full set of std tests in in order - you should get tested for Herpes-II, Syphillis, Gonorrhea, and Chlyamydia.
