Turner's syndrome?

A person affected by Turner's syndrom has only a single sex (X) chromosome, yet may survive. On the other hand, a person having a single Y chromosome will not survive.
Why?

the easiest way to answer this question is that in the female (two X chromosomes), the information (DNA) is stored on each of the chromosomes. So if you only had one, you could get by.
In the male, you have one X and one Y chromosome. If you have one missing, then 1/2 of your information is missing...because X & Y chromosomes do not carry the same info as X's do...

I'm a little rusty, but I'll try to explain it as simply as possible. Men have 1 X and 1 Y chromosome. Women have 2 X.
ONLY the X chromosome has mitochondria. Mitochondria makes ATP. ATP is the major energy source for cells. Without energy, the cells cannot survive, so no X chromosome=no life.
