I'm not sure if my daughter suffered a seizure?

My youngest daughter just turned 10 yrs. A year ago, she had a nail infection & doctor put her on some new antibiotics to treat the infection. The doctor instructed me to drain the nail infection with a clean sewing needle to relieve pressure. The next morning I was draining the infection & she then feel backwards, her eyes rolled back into her head and her body arched & started jerking as if she was having a seizure. We rushed her to the hospital & the doctors informed me that she didn't have a seizure, just a case of syncope. I assumed it was a reaction to the medication.

Never happened again until last night when we went to get her ears pierced. She claimed she wasn't scared at all & was excited to get her ears pierced. Seconds after the ear piercing the same thing happened - eyes rolled back into her head, back arched & start seizing. Within seconds she is fine but nauseous & very tired. She doesn't remember any of it at all. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

I also thought about a fear of needles after last night, but honestly she has had needles before without any seizures. I've also "tested" this theory by sticking her finger with a needle and nothing happened. I feel like the doctors don't really want to spend their time investigating my concerns.

It sounds as though your daughter got very faint from the pain of both situations. She may have started to feel faint, and tried to keep herself from fainting/falling, thus the jerking motion. If she recovers within seconds, and feels nauseous, that goes along with a fainting spell, in that her heart rate may have slowed down because of a vasovagal response to the pain.

In the future, if she will have a procedure done that may cause that sort of pain, she should lay down while it's being done. That way she will still have good blood flow to the brain and may not have such a dramatic reaction to the pain. She should also be encouraged to just relax and take a few deep breaths during the procedure.

Also, I can't understand why that first doctor would have had you drain the nail. If she was in the doc office, why didn't they just do it there? Anyway, you can tell her pediatrician about the episodes next time she goes in for a check-up, unless it occurs again before that time.

I think the idea of a needle, or in the case of ear piercing, the thought of it makes her faint. Did she pass out? Does she have a fear of needles? I know I do and many times through the years, I have passed out from a shot or sometimes the thought of it makes me feel ill. I look the other way and try to focus on something other than the doctor.

yes but only after i was on meth for a long time
the first one i don't remember, i couldn't talk
the second one was more like that i was really tired
the best thing you can do if it happens again is to roll her on her side. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN HER MOUTH to keep from swallowing her tongue you can't swallow ur tongue

It sounds like a seizure to me. I would get her to a specialist to better evaluate it. Good luck.

My friend has. She was diagnosed with some kind of migrane. She had a seizure or whatever after she had an energy drink. She was sent to UC Davis Hospital and everything.

You have an interesting situation. On the one hand, syncope is rarely associated with muscle spasms, but on the other it's unusual that a seizure would occur only twice, and in similar situations (needles). If you went to the ER (you said you rushed her to the hospital, so i'm assuming it was the ER), I'd make an appointment with your pediatrician. ER doctors are great at handling trauma situations but are really not there for long term care. Your pediatrician should know her whole history and has more time to assess the possibilities. Best of luck, I have a 10yr old sister and would really be freaking out if this were to happen to her.

Well, last year I went on a camping trip with my class, and the last night we would spend in the dorm, the neighboring dorm had a diabetic who had a seizure that night. She, too, was rushed to the hospital. If you are unsure if your daughter had a seizure or not, remember the day it happened. Was it sudden, or was she taking it slowly, because the girl who had the seizure was very suddenly shaking and then she made sounds as if she were choking. Sorry to scare you, but according to the dorm next door that was what they saw.

My daughter has seizures and this is what she does. I have no doubt its a seizure. My daughter gets them when she is in too much pain, like an ear infection (without fever).
