16 month old high white blood count, swollen glands? |
My son is 16 months old. For the past 2 and a half months he has had swollen glands but no other symptoms. My doctor kept telling me it was just a virus, i finally got her to do a blood test his first WBC was 19,000 than she said it must be a bacterial infection and put him on antibotics, took another CBC a week later and it was 15,000. They then send me to Detroit Childrens Hospital to see a blood disease specialist.... They did another CBC and his blood count went up to 16,500 and also a blood smear that showed a virus... i was just wondering if anyone knew what type of virus could last for this long? I'm not exactly sure as to what disease could last so long but you really need to insist on getting your son some help. Swollen glands are a sign of a diverse number of things, from a common cold to HIV. Mono has also been known to cause swelling of the Lymph Nodes. Lupus, an immune disorder, can cause swelling as well. Could be mono. It could last a very long time. I'd be concerned about doctors who aren't giving you the whole story. Write down all your questions and go in there...don't leave until you understand everything pertaining to your son's condition. Good luck. hiv ?? sorry Elevated white blood cell counts can mean many things. I would get a screening for Leukemia and pray! To have that high of a count for so long sounds fishy to me. The U of M has a wonderful children's hospital. I would take your little one there and talk to a Cancer Specialist ASAP! |
