Are artificial sweeteners bad for your teeth?

Like Sweet n Low, and other sweeteners like that. If I'm moving away from carbonated/sugary drinks on account of my teeth, could I be safe drinking iced tea with an artificial sweetener packet (besides the staining)?

Artificial sweeteners do not cause tooth decay, but you'd probably be better off drinking the stuff with sugar. The sweeteners are associated with cancers and can cause skin and intestinal problems amongst other things. The scientific community is only now just starting to look into these links. Read the page below for more info. Just try drinking regular tea (in moderation) - you will get used to the taste without sugar, and don't try honey b/c honey is actually more harmful to your teeth than regular sugar. I gave up pop/soda a few years ago and iced tea last year. I don't even crave the stuff anymore. Every once in a while I'll have an iced tea if I'm out somewhere and it's hot, but now I almost find it too sweet. It takes a while for the cravings to leave your system. Tea is the best, it doesn't have the amount of caffeine coffee does, and it has lots of benefits. Try a nice mild green tea, or get the best brand which is PG Tips (from the UK). Or if you must have something on the sweet side, opt for natural juices and always rinse your mouth out with water afterwards if you can't brush.

artificial sweeteners may cause cancer

Not only are they bad for your teeth, (all sweets are bad for your teeth, artifical or not; and when you think about it, most sweets are artificial), but they can cause cancer. Read the red print on the back of a Sweet 'N Low packet.

In spite of all the hysteria surrounding artificial sweeteners, some can actually be good for your teeth. Do your research.

Artificial sweeteners can reduce the decay-causing bacteria in your mouth. Used in moderation, they do no harm and may actually benefit you as far as cavities.
