Why can't I buy plain gum with no artificial sweeteners and flavors anymore? Is this a conspiracy?


Aspartame and other un-sugars are known to be toxic and cause weight gain!

I have wondered why every bubble gum maker has switched to artificial sweeteners. Every time I get the hankerin' for a stick of gum, I look at the label. What ever happened to good old sugar?

Artificial sweeteners may affect weight gain by tricking your body into thinking that you just had sugar. By making your body think it's had some sugar, it will set your internal sweet calories sensor into thinking that sweet things dont increase your blood sugar level. If your body thinks that, it may allow other sweet foods with corn syrup or real sugar to be ingested and stored improperly (weight gain or loss)

Thats the short and "sweet" version ofthe story- there is a lot more to it.

I've just stopped chewing gum. It sucks, but I feel better knowing I'm not ingesting a "plastic" sugar that is tricking me into thinking the gum has sugar.

Also, some of the methods of making an artificial sweetener are worse for the environment than growing and processing real sugar. So not only are you screwign yourself out of the sugar high you are craving, but now your poisoning your own fishbowl.

On a side note- apparently you lower your chance of diabetes by using more artificial sweeteners. I'm just worried about what disease they havent diagnosed yet....

Oh, and some bottling plants for RC COLA use real sugar in their recipe. Most everyone else has switched to high fructose corn syrup. For those who dont know, high fructose corn syrup is almost an artificial sweetener. It's also been shown to possibly be the culprit in some of America's weight gain problem. HFCS is made by adding an enzyme to break down corn starch into something that we werent really designed to ingest. The fun part is you still get the sugar high :)

There is plenty of gum without artificial sweeteners, although most use artificial flavoring. Actually, plain old "gum" is some nasty tasting stuff. And contrary to popular stories, aspartame is perfectly safe and doesn't cause weight gain as long as you control yourself and your diet otherwise. Weight gain is caused by the same things that always caused it, you eat too many calories and expend too few. Don't matter if the calories came from carrots or cake- too many make you fat.
