Skin cancer from tanning?

Is skin cancer is only caused by being OVEREXPOSED to the UV rays? For instance, you won't get skin cancer as long as you moderate your exposure to the sun...for example: if I go to a tanning salon only once a month, then I'm not at risk.

Any tan is sign of damage. Tanning booths are not safer than the sun. Any dermatologist will tell you that there is no such thing as a safe tan. If you want to be darker, get the fake tan.

Any sign of a tan is a sign of skin damage!

Absolutely not.

I'm not expert, but I think it's cumulative. Better safe than sorry.

Well, tanning salons usually won't give you skin cancer, but they will give you bad acne and other skin blemishes, that could lead to more severe diseases and conditions....So still be careful!

You can get skin cancer from other things. You are less at risk if you are protected when you are in sun or tan at salons, but everyone has a small chance that they will get anything.

ya it can happen, but u can also get cancer from carpet fibers, and trees and everyday crap like that. dont worry

if you are fairly careful about how much you are out in the sun with sunscreen on, its better. but only going to a tanning salon once a month doesn't necessarily mean you have no risk of getting it.

WRONG WRONG WRONG. Tanning bed is the WORST thing ever. Might as well call it a cancer box.

If you are outside and exposed to uva/uvb rays (even on cloudy days) your able to get skin cancer.

Just because you go only once a month doesn't mean you won't get it. It is best to be your own skin color or get a spray tan.

Any exposure to sun is bad for your skin believe it or not. And tanning is worse for you than anything.. Who wants to look orange anyway!!! LOL... I can so tell when someone goes to a tanning bed vs. a natural tan from sunlight outside.

Well there is always a risk of getting skin cancer from tanning but as long as you tan in moderation and go for yearly skin checks you should be fine.

Nope-the damage is done over time so it no much 'over' exposure its any unprotected exposure period! If you going to the tanning salon at all, your cells probably getting double the exposure as someone who doesn't. Besides, if you are an anomoly and don't get skin cancer you'll be aging your skin rapidly and will have lots of wrinkles and sagging skin to show off with your new tan.
Cm'on don't be so naive-don't go to the tanning salon EVER!

A tanning salon is worse than the sun.

Yes usalley thats were u usually get skin cancer from but if u like to tan maybe spray tan or there are plenty of creams that u leave overnight on your body and make you tan. Then again if u have to absolutely have to sun tan then nessarily not that often do some of the options
I also love to love tan but am scared of ever getting skin cancer so i try not to tan that much but use the tips above

No thats false, you'd be surpsied by what "overexposed" to the sun really means, you are at risk anytime you intentially expose your skin to UV rays like that. the tanning salon isn't any safer even once a month. Tanning is a form of burning. Any burning increases your risk.

I think suntanning for extended periods of time would increase your risk, even if you did it only once a month. However, the benefits of sunlight actually help prevent many types of cancer, and the sun offers a good supply of vitamin D, which most of us don't get nearly enough of. Plus, I read that around 95% of people who get skin cancer from tanning get the type that is not deadly (the deadly type of skin cancer is most often passed on thru genetics), and there's something like a 98% recovery rate.
But, sunscreen blocks out almost ALL of the sun's benefits! So the best thing to do would just be to get some sun (REAL sun, not tanning salon rays) at 10-15 minutes at a time, taking about 20-35 minute breaks in between tanning. That way, you won't get aged skin or a high risk of skin cancer, but you will actually prevent many types of cancer!

visit your doctor annually for a skin cancer check, use sunscreen, and avoid tanning booths.

i dunno, i know that tanning salons exposes u to more uv rays then sitting in the sun day, well thas what i heard, i really dont know anything, im just gettin some points for that elusive level 2
