Sinusitis remedies?

Do you know of any sinus remedies? I have recurring sinusitis and it can be very painful sometimes and I need some remedies to help relieve the pain and the pressure.

Though there are very classic symptoms that accompany sinusitis, the truth is that not every patient suffering from this condition presents the same symptoms. Doctors have come to classify sinusitis, in their off-medical-text jargon, as "dry sinusitis" and "wet sinusitis".

Dry sinusitis refers to an inflammation of the sinuses accompanied by sometimes severe pain due to congestion, and very dry mucus sitting within the concavities that form the sinuses. This type of sinus inflammation almost always comes with infection. The problem is that it's been widely accepted that infections are only produced by bacterias, but it has been recently discovered (in 2001) that there are sinus infections caused by fungus as well. And this type of infection may be preceded by mycotoxins and regular toxins coming from either outside sources (environment) or inside sources (i.e., continuous exposition to the same chemicals in foods day by day).

Wet sinusitis is characterized by runny nose, lethargy, allergy-like symptoms, mucus, and tiredness.

General recommendations:

1. Check out food sensitivities first: milk, cheese, corn, wheat, chocolate and EGGS (beware of eggs in sinusitis!). Eggs, particularly, contain a powerful destructive enzyme "avidine", which can severely irritate the mucus membrane that covers the sinuses.

2. Eliminate those foods you eat more frequently: do this at least for two months. When you expose your body to the same foods for years, the enzymes that brake them down decrease with time, and those raw proteins will have to face an aggressive reaction by the immune system. The result? Mucous formation to isolate those raw proteins which the body interpret as "foreigners" or toxins.

3. For the congestion and mucous formation: drink 4-5 TBSP of Swedish Bitter (an antique liquid herbal formula), and dilute it with 2 TBSP of Tea Tree Oil.

4. To strengthen the immune system locally: take 100 mg. of Zinc per day, and 3,000-4,000 mg. of Vit. C daily.

5. Massage your front head and both sides of your frontal upper head with Eucalyptus oil at night, and right after that apply gently a fomentation towel, not too hot, for about 15 minutes (re-heat the towel every time it gets colder). Do this about 45 mins. before going to bed at night.

6. This following juice is rich both in Beta-carotene (vegetarian version of vit. A) and Glutathione (a natural and non specific immune-modulator): Combine Carrot, Kale, Parsley, Ginger (1/4 of your index finger size), Celery, Lemon juice (about 1 ounce), and Apple--should make about 20 oz. Drink it slowly using a straw. Don't sweeten it, and don't add ice or cold water. (Repeat by mid afternoon. Don't have any dinner past 4 pm.)

7. Avoid fried foods, sugar (use Maple Syrup grade B instead), coffee, refined flours and cereals. Don't eat between meals--so, no snacks!

8. Drink plenty of water every day.

Good luck! :)

P.S.: This is how I treat my patients with sinusitis.

Drugstores sell saline solutions for that; this website also recommends vaporizers:

Olive leaf capsules....work great for me! I have to take it every day though as I have very chronic sinus issues. Tiger balm and menthol can help relieve pressure if you get a flare up.

i had a bad bout of this earlier in the year and ended up on antibiotics and the dr recommened some menthol and eucaplyptus drops in hot water for me to breath in and release the pressuer. it helped a lot to unblock passages. i would just have the bowl and a towel and use it for about 30 minutes a few times a day. hope you recover soon.

Hi Princess, a sinus infection happens when the paranasal sinuses on either side of the nose get inflamed. The inflammation blocks the narrow passageways, making the mucus collect there. This collected mucus soon becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. That's how a sinus infection begins. Yes, the symptoms of a sinus infection begin with headache, facial pain, nasal congestion, fever, green or yellow discharge, a heavy face feeling, etc. The infection usually lasts for three weeks or more.

The cure for sinusitis is steam inhalation, nasal irrigation, hot fluids such as tea or chicken soup, and plenty of rest. Aspirin or paracetamol tablets and decongestants are some of the medicines commonly prescribed for sinus infections. If the symptoms continue for more than 48 hours, the pateint should be started on antibiotics or nasal steroids. If you don't treat the sinus infection pretty early, it could even cause bronchitis and pneumonia and damage the sinuses and cheekbones. You would then have to go for nasal surgery to repair the damage.

When the sinus infection refuses to respond to medication, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is the most efficient treatment.

My husband uses the spray and it has worked for him thus far...

Diet advice:
* Eat foods rich in vitamin C, like grapefruit, oranges, and tangerines. Studies that have shown that high levels of vitamin C help clear congestion.
* Add chili peppers, ginger, garlic, and/or horseradish to your daily recipes. These foods contain agents that break up mucus and relieve congestion.
* Eat pineapple. It contains bromelain, which helps reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.
* Choose high-quality, organic, hormone- and antibiotic-free 鈥済rass-fed鈥?meats.
* Increase your omega-3 essential fatty acids by selecting high-quality wild-caught salmon, miminal-mercury albacore tuna, fish oil, avocados, and sprouted walnuts.
* Eat raw, organic vegetables.
* Add high-quality fiber to your diet, such as ground flax seed.
* Add healthy saturated fats to your diet, such as organic virgin coconut oil.
* Choose sprouted, whole-grain products.
* Add nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods, such as sprouted nuts and seeds, to your diet.
* Drink purified water throughout the day.

Flaxseed or linseed meal in your diet will enhance bowel health which in turn promotes clear sinuses. If you are smoker then the smoke super heats the lungs and the sinuses block up to protect the lungs. Answer stop smoking.

First you should try a neti pot or a commercial saline solution used to flush out the sinuses. You squirt some salt water in one nostril and have it come out the other -- sounds strange but it works and feels good!

Then you need an immune booster. The maker of Immune Alert -- the great immune supplement my family uses -- discovered the product because he was trying to cure his own chronic sinus infections! Check it out at www.immunealert.com.

This all-natural product (made from beta glucan, a yeast extract) is really wonderful for maintaining overall health. Immune Alert comes in formulas for adults (chewable and capusules) and cherry-flavored chewable tablets for kids (my son loves them!!)

There is a free trial going on now, so go to their website and order it.

Howdy Princess,

I actually just watched a program, I think it was Oprah, about this exact problem.

And they had this little thing that looked like a baby tea-pot, that you fill with water, and over the sink, you pour it in one nostril, and it comes out the other one.

Sounds weird, I know, but it supposedly really helps.

I can't remember the name of it, but you should check it out!!

Good Luck!!!!

yes. this website has already made blends that help with sinus. i have the same problem. or you can go to their free recipe section and try out different stuff there.
