Shoulder injury possibly while weight training- what exactly happened to me?

A couple weeks ago, I noticed pain in my left shoulder. If I rest my arm, I feel nothing, but when I bring my arm forward from the hanging position, or if I move my arm as if to touch my back, the stretching can be rather painful. What type of injury is this? Could I have over-streched, or lifted too much weight doing shoulder exercises? The odd part is that the injury became gradually more noticeable over the first couple of days, and I can't pinpoint what caused it.

You could have slightly dis-located your shoulder, It happened to my dad when he was playing paintball. What he did was he bought a sling and had it on for about a week and a half. But I don't even know if your shoulder is dislocated~! So.. Check with your doctor, see exactly what is wrong, DO NOT LISTEN TO ME IF I'M WRONG!!!! But, like I said, try to keep your arm from moving for a while, like I said get a sling from your doctor, (I'm not sure if you can buy them anymore...) And you should be fine.

What caused it was probably when you were lifting weights, you might have jerked down too hard and there was probably more weight on your left arm which caused it to become injured. Did you feel it kind of jolt out of place? Like when you pull out your fingers? Does It feel like you have an empty space in between your shoulder blade and your actual shoulder? If those questions are a yes, then you dislocated it.

Hope it helps!!!

That would be your rotator cuff, the most common lifting injury and THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE ***. Stop lifting for about a week, and just search on yahoo for rotator cuff exercises, just so you can see a diagram. Do them after warming up and before lifting. As for how you lift, lower the weight a bit, maintain better control over the weight and focus on you form a lot more. If you keep aggravating it, you'll need surgery eventually, and believe me it sucks. Any exercises that you notice pain in your shoulder, just stop. Keep trying new lifts until you find a routine that doesn't bother your shoulder. Everyone's anatomy is different so it will take a bit of trial and error.

You describe a 'torn rotator cuff'. Every time you feel pain, your are adding more small tears until it reaches the point that you have lost range of motion.

A cold compression shoulder wrap and rest would be a good idea, followed by very gentle range of motion, but no to the point of pain. After several days, you'll find your range of motion increasing. Once you have full range of motion back, begin gradual strengthening exercises to restore the shoulder muscles.

It will probably take several months to heal provided you do not re-injure yourself. If you do, you'll have to start all over.

Good luck.
