Shortness of breath even after 2 heart surgeries.?

In 97, triple by pass LIMA was not done. Past 2 yrs i was having shortness of breath. The new card drs did all kinds of tests & did another by pass & just did the LIMA. Of the 3 viens from 97 2 were not working. The problem still exists. Any idea why? or is it my lungs?

The problem could be your lungs. You could have COPD. If your heart was damaged from heart attacks, you could have cardiomyopathy or heart failure. This means that your heart cannot pump well enough and the fluid backs up into your lungs. Ask your doctors what your LVEF or Ejection Fraction is. Both COPD and heart failure are manageable with medication.

About 10 years ago, I had a series of heart attacks. After finally bypassing my LAD (left anterior descending) the problem was corrected and I have not had a heart attack since. However, the damage done to my heart back then has finally caught up to me in the form of heart failure. Shortness of breath with any kind of activity at all is very common. I take any number of drugs, have a defibrillator, and quit working. I am only 47 but what you going to do.

Your docs should be able to easily tell if heart failure is coming on with a nuclear stress test, or in your case with all of your recent procedures they should know. Ask them about your ejection fraction. A low ejection fraction indicates heart failure - that is the fraction % of blood able to be pumped out of the heart with each beat. The lower the ejection fraction, the less blood, therefore less oxygen. It can also cause swelling of the legs, fluid in or around the lungs etc.

Cant do much about it, but knowing what it is, does make it easier to deal with.

Hope that helps.
