Shingles in Children?

I have several questions. - Our 7 year old was just told she has shingles. She has been going to a Chirporactor for the last few weeks and having spinal manipulation, mechanical - low battery powered nerve stimulation, etc which I did not agree with (she is with ex right now temp) I did not know about this. However she came to my home with a rash. I took her to the dr and it looked like dry patches of skin, well she complained about them and the ex took her and said she had shingles. Now I know the virus lays dormant, however could the treatments for her nerves/spine trigger this onset?
Is this possible in addition to the stress she is under - new environmnet additional stresses?
I'm pregnant and was around her but show no signs of shingles and yes i have had chicken pox, is my unborn child at risk?

yes she had chicken pox when she was 3. it looked like dry skin rash - however she started to really complain and they took her to 2 drs and a dermatoligst and said she had shingles. I asked my ex if they are going to run test for her immune issues and he freaked out about my question. Perhaps he is just playing games as he always has.

First of all, why on earth is your child seeing a Chiropractor AND receiving nerve stimulation?! I don't know of a single child that should be put through this kind of unsupportable and poorly researched intervention. Sure, you need to see them 3 times a week for a month, then twice a week for another, then weekly for another. Then, they're going to tell you, "better see the doctor." I see/hear it all the time. Don't waste your money.

Aside from that...

I've NEVER seen a child with shingles at such a young age. I'm not saying it can't happen, but that child would definitely have some immune deficiency issues if it did. If they were dry patches of skin, then I doubt highly it was shingles to begin with. Typically, shingles erupts with VESICLES (tiny blisters) and on ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE BODY. It does not cross the center line of the body at all. The patient will typically feel a sensation of burning and itching. It is quite painful to say the least.

If it were scattered dry patches of skin, especially in the folds of the arms, knees, etc., then I would suggest this to be more like eczema. Check the child.

Because it is related to the chicken pox (varicalla) virus, Yes, shingles could be a problem for you because your pregnant. Maybe your Ex is telling you this to keep you away from your child. Better verify with the child's doctor who made the diagnosis first, and then go from there.

Best of luck.

Call your OB
Has your daughter had CP? You can only get shingles if you had them (like you say you did) - otherwise the dry patches (if they are around her spine) could be shingles or eczema (stress) as well -

Here are a few links to better help your concerns -
Good Luck.

Stress is a major factor in the onset of shingles, and I believe the treatments may have contributed to some degree. Shingles are directly related to the nerves, and I'm sure the stimulation along with the stress of a new environment caused the problem. You don't have anything to worry about with your unborn child- shingles can not be caught, they do not shed into the air like chickenpox do-there is also no evidence to show any risk to pregnancy even if shingles were to develop. Best wishes to you and your daughter, I hope they clear up quickly.

If you have had chicken pox your unborn baby is safe.

I thought only old people got shingles........ I had shingles when I was 55 and I didn't think that was old.....My grandmother got them when she was in her 80's.

Dr told me children can get shingles if they have had chicken pox. So your daughter could quite easily have shingles.

It comes out when the body is under stress and it appears on the body where in the past some injury has happened.

I had bells palsy on the right side of my face 25yrs ago and my shingles came out on my right forehead near my eye.

My dr was very firm to me about NOT touching my eyes as apparently shingles can blind you if the rash is scratched and the fingers touch your eyes.

I was prescribed a drug Famvir. 72hrs is the time range from when the rash appears to stop the pain and complications from growing into neuralgia.

Take your daughter to the Dr again ASAP if you haven't already. the rash will blister and become quite painful.

I had shingles when I was 12- don't know why. It ran its course and went away, still have some scarring and knumbness- but no big deal. But they certainly looked nothing like dry patches of skin though, quite the oppisite- looked like a cluster of blisters almost like a fresh burn on the right side of my back fluid filled and gross. No one else in my family contracted them. I think they can be caused by stress or a weak immune system and thats why older people get them more often. I think chicken pox are contagious but I don't think shingles are, I may be wrong....
