Are shingles an HIV related disease?

i just want to know whether tis is a fact or a myth about shingles being an HIV related disease.I have heard people say this but am not really sure, help me understand.

No, they are herpes zoster.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/shing...

no, older adults may get shingles if they had chicken pox as a child. it is another form of chicken pox just more painful.

no. it's a virus. it's a form of herpes. www.webmd.com

Shingles come from having chicken pox. The virus hides itself in the nervous system and stays there until one's immune system weakens. Stress, anxiety, and HIV cause the immune system to weaken. That's when the shingles can show up. But you don't have to be HIV+ to get shingles.

Shingles is caused by the Varicella zoster virus. It can lead to Varicella pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. More than 90% of cases of varicella-zoster virus pneumonia in adults occur in patients with lymphoma and immunocompromised patients. Varicella-zoster virus pneumonia is the most serious complication of disseminated varicella-zoster virus infection with mortality rates of 9%鈥?0%

I don't think so. look up the definition of shingles. I don't think they are related.

Shingles isn't related to HIV. Shingles is actually related to chicken pox, and in fact the virus is very similar to the genital herpes virus (which IS an STD).

Shingles (varicella zoster) is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Basically it's like this... when you have chicken pox, the virus 'dies' (actually 'falls dormant' is more accurate), always along a nerve path. Sometimes, this virus is re-awakened, so to speak and follows along that nerve path (which is why it stays confined to one area of the body, and doesn't spread all over the way chicken pox does). This can happen at any time, whether you are HIV positive or not. The reason why people who are HIV positive are more likely to get it is because they are immuno-compromised. Other auto-immune disorders apply to this as well. People with diseases like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis are also at greater risk, as are cancer-patients who are on chemo. The more impaired your immune system, the more likely shingles is to rear its ugly head.

no, its the same virus as chicken pox. the only relation to HIV is the term virus.

YOU ARE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP SHINGLES IF YOU ARE HIV +. YOU CAN GET SHINGLES IF YOU ARE NEGATIVE TOO BUT USUALLY THERE IS SOMETHING GOING ON WITH YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM(STRESS, OLD AGE, CURRENT DEBILITATION) THE CDC HAS NOW LISTED DISSEMINATED RECURRENT SHINGLES AS AN AIDS DEFINING ILLNESS ALONG WITH A CD4 COUNT BELOW 200 AND A + HIV TEST

I think so, because your immune system can be very weak. When I had shingles the doctor said something to me about my immune system and I seem to remember her saying something about being tested for AIDS. Anyway I'm completely well now, I was just really stressed out at work and not sleeping well so I think that's why it happened.

not really, we shud say it is related 2 chicken pox rather than HIV,the virus would not appear unless u have got HIV or something like that can the virus be showed coz the immune system is weak then,so don worry, i think most of my friends on positivesingles.com know this kind of knowledge.
