Antidepressants and sexual health?

Hello. I'm a young man, I've been taking prescribed sertraline (prozac familiar) 50 mg/day for about 8 months now, and it's almost impossible not to notice the decrease in my sex drive and libido. Does anyone know a way to effectively (not ideally) revert this effects, 'cause this is really bothering me. I've already asked my psychiatrist and he said it was not such a big concern. But it is to me! I'm a very sexual being, so please I need some advice, preferably evidence-based. Thanks in advance!

The answer is Wellbutrin (buproprion hcl or budeprion) - not only is it an effective antidepressant - MD's often prescribe it to offset the sexual side effects of other drugs.

I've been taking it for a year - I've been through the med-meri-go-round and have paid for the smartest Dr's.

I love Wellbutrin so much that I bought stock in GSK. Go for the generic extended release version - ask your MD about budeprion xl - 300 mg's every morning.

cheers

All anti depressants seem to have that side effect on both men and women. I have tried many different ones. The only thing that can really help is to get off of them. My husband has used enzyte in the past and it has helped with his sexual desire alot. You could give that a try. It's non habit forming, but kinda expensive.

i know that sometimes there are other suitable anti-depressants that you can use that have less sexual side affects--I would imagine that it would be irritating--try a new med and if the Dr. doesn't want to do that--find a new Dr. that understands and wants to help you with this issue--maybe hes not concerned about you--but you are--and that's what matters! good luck and i hope this helped out if any

Many of the SSRI anti depressants (Prozac, Citalopram, Sertraline) have this side effect.

I've read that Wellbutrin is less likely to affect people in this way, so you should ask your psychiatrist about switching to it. If he's again dismissive of your concern, then find another doctor who will take your feelings more seriously.

You can ask your psychiatrist if he can change your medication. Bupropion may be a good alternative unless you have a medical condition that is incompatible. He should be able to give you a good explanation if he doesn't want to change your meds. He may have a valid reason to keep you on the prozac. We're all different, and we each have our own circumstances.

I wish you the very best of luck, and that your issues get resolved and hopefully one day soon, you won't require any meds.

If you are very concerned and your psychiatrist is trivializing your worries, I would ask for a second opinion. There are many different medications out there, and there is no reason to start feeling better in your mood and not enjoy all aspects of life.

Every anti-depressant have this effect again all I can advise is to cope with it until you start to be weaned of the tablets. Once you are in the process of coming off the tablets you will generally start to feel a sence of achievement & you will start to get back to normal.
This is not a long term effect and once you are off the tablets everything will get back to normal. Be patient & concentrate on getting better.

I've been through that over and over, and could not find a med that helped me and didn't decrease my sex drive. I resorted to stop taking them intermittedly for planning sex in advance. It seems nothing ever goes as planned! I finally weened off of Anti-depressants and worked more with therapy and support groups. It's a slower process, but I am improving and my sex drive is ready whenever you say...Go!

ginko biloba and ginseng. take daily.
