I understand that organic food is processed using sewage. Can I get hepatitis from that?????

I wonder why you think organic food is processed with sewage? The idea behind organic food is that it is produced without the use of pesticides, herbicides, or anything harmful to our health. Organic farmers have pest-control techniques such as using ladybugs and other helpful insects to control the insects that eat crops, and they pay attention to such things as crop rotation to ensure the soil is not depleted of nutrients. And it is still a good idea to wash your produce even if it is organic, to remove soils, insects and germs left by handling. But hepatitis?

(five minutes go by)

Ok, I was curious, so I looked it up and found that Hep can be contracted by handling contaminated produce. Apparently washing will reduce the contamination but cooking for five minutes will eliminate it. But not to worry:

" . . . they say all fruits and vegetables, whether grown domestically or imported, should be thoroughly washed, and the damaged parts removed. Fruits can be peeled and the outer layers of leafy vegetables can be removed, Painter said.

"If you're healthy and don't have any particular ailments that make you susceptible, there are probably more important things you could spend your time worrying about, like the mortgage payment," said Jerry Gillespie, director of the Western Institute for Food Safety and Security at the University of California, Davis.

Very interesting question! So, wash all your fruits and veg and don't worry about getting Hep that way.

The biomass resulting from the processing of sewage is used as fertilizer on organic and non-organic food. In the USA, contamination should not be a problem unless the regulations are ignored and laws broken. It would be the use in other countries that may be of concern. Report It

However, Hepatitits would not be a concern. Someone with the disease handling the materials is much, much more likely. The biggest concern is E-coli bacteria. See

Care to quote your sources on that information? I doubt it's veracity.

the food is CLEANED before it hits the stores, so it's doubtful...

not sewage natural fertalizers and all organic things you get from a grocer are inspected so no worries, take care

Never human sewage, ever. It would kill the plants. Even fresh animal dung will kill plants. I keep seeing this silly idea and wonder who came up with it.. probably commercial farms that want you to keep eating stuff soaked in deadly chemicals. In any case, people have been eating veggies grown in organic fertilizer for a gazillion years and no bad has come of it.

Some foods are grown using recycled treated sewage. This is true of both organically grown and other vegetables.

In developed countries the sewage is treated to prevent pathogens such as hepatitis A from contaminating the food. In some less developed countries this may not be the case, and you should always carefully clean and peel any uncooked fruit and vegetables in such places.

In developed countries the main risky food for hepatitis A is uncooked shellfish, such as oysters, which may have been grown in estuaries polluted by untreated sewage spillage.
